Stupid Genesis Model 2 question.

Post by SoltanGris »

Found a filthy genesis 2 with cables, power supply for $15. Opened it up, VA0 and I'm pretty sure that's a CXA1145M chip!

Anyway, I split the case open and disassembled it to soak the shell and a silver metal piece popped out and vanished. It fit into a little space one the back of the console where there was a round hole. That's it. Just a chunk of metal held in place with a hole in the plastic case. Not sure if the metal piece was notched or had a hole through it. Kind of reminded me of those "Kensington" lock attachment points they used to put on laptops so you could cable-lock your equipment to a bike rack or something.

Is it important? Game seems to work fine, just thought it was an odd thing.

It was probably just a nut, similar to the same hole on the back of a model one that was for 'locking' the Power Base Convertor on. Nothing to be worried about.

Yes, it's just a nut for locking an accessory on.

That revision has god awful audio, you know. One of the worst revisions you can get, unless you plan to do the Crystal Clear Audio mod, and use RGB or mod for S-Video.

Yeah, not the burst your bubble or anything but what Ziggy said, unless you're planning on modding it then thumbs up.

The VA3 and VA4 are the best revisions for sound as far as the model 2 is concerned. The ones with the smaller motherboard.

Yea I managed to get a VA4 Genesis 2, and the composite still sucks on that. Can't imagine how bad the the VA0-2 are. The stereo on a VA4 is lovely.

That makes sense that it's for securing an accessory. No electrical connections, just sorta sat in a little cavity created when you put the top and bottom together. Only saw the metal bit for a split second before it vanished so no idea if it had threads or what.

I will definitely do the S-video mod. The CCAM looks a bit tedious with all those individual components. Maybe if I can buy a PCB from someone...I'm more of a breadboard kinda guy.
