When I moved to NC I discovered wild bats, and was captivated.

My parents had at least three bats swoop into their house, Great Outdoors style, since they've lived near Blowing Rock. All three times my Sister had left the front door cracked.

As a kid I would feed the bats too. I'd stand under a street light waiting for the flicker of bat wings, and then I would flip raisins or craisins straight up in the air, to which the bats would usually nab. I learned an easy way to gran a bat was to flip a coin in the air, preferably a dime, but that seemed jerkish to me.

We had one-way doors put in - bats get out, but can't come back in. They had to find a new place to roost.

A guy I used to play World of Warcraft with once had a bat in his house. Him and his buddies were getting drunk on the weekend and a bat got in. So he grabbed a fry pan and tried to knock the bat out. Instead he managed to knock himself out in his flailing around. While he was out one of his buddies decided to try and shoot the bat, but missed and hit the neighbor's cow instead.

Years ago had a cheap second floor corner studio apartment. One evening woke up to a mysterious creature flying around in the dark. Scared the shit out of me, but after turning a light on realized it's just a bat, poor thing probably more scared than I was. I was able to shoo it out of the bedroom and through the front door, but wondered just how it got inside in the first place.

There was a false ceiling with some duct space above it in the closet, so I figured that somehow the bat found a way in through there. But if there was an opening to the outside, I never found it. It must be the only explanation though, or so I thought....

As "luck" would have it, several weeks later I was watching TV in the living room. Got up to piss, and upon returning saw a bat fly in, without pause, through what was a less than one inch gap between two loosely fitted window panes.

I was so amazed that not only did it enter like that, just shot right in a space this ------- size, but also that I was able to witness it! Explained how the other one got in. Sadly, the second bat put up a fight in trying to remove it. I had to give it a good whack with a broom to force it out the front door, and heard it land with a thud down below.

Why would anyone want to kill a bat much less shoot at it?

Bats will destroy an attic. They'll tear up the insulation and potentially chew electrical lines. Not to mention the pee and poop.

That said, I never desired to "kill" any bats. I initially tried humane traps.... but that's when I thought they were squirrels. Once I realized I was up against bats I had pros come in.

That said, they're nice to have around if you have insect problems. But I don't remember if you have mosquitos in Maine.

They have black flies. They are way, way worse than mosquitos...and bats are useless against them!

Because then it wouldn't be a funny made up story.

"A bat flew in and out of my house" is no "A bat flew in my house so my friend shot a cow".

There's tons of bats over here. The palm trees have these little black seeds that the bats seem to love, so at night they'll flock around the trees for hours. There's so many it feels like the scene from Batman Begins, when Bruce falls into the well.

Well ok, maybe not that many bats, but still a lot. And in the morning there's a big circle of little black splatters around the trees, which is pretty gross.
