The best DS flash cart is the Acekard 2i. It's compatible with all games and has advanced features like a built in flash driver (making it much, much easier to use emulators and homebrew). It works on the DSi XL too. There's also download play support, a built in cheat engine, and ten save slots for each game.
I haven't enjoyed my DS emulation experience - even Game Boy games are not quite right - but if that's the platform you want to use, the Acekard 2i is the way to go. I use mine for fan translations of RPGs, VNs, and dating games though.
Off topic, the PSP doesn't suck at all. I have over 50 games for mine I understand the reluctance to use it for emulation. With a 333 mHz processor, many games will run at full speed, but not accurately. Even if it's more powerful than the DS.
If you want really good handheld emulation, official compilations and downloads like Virtual Console and PSN will be your best bet.

Here's both my xl systems along with a recent(?) R4 card. This r4 is made to take up to 32gb micro sd card. Its compatible with the 3ds console. But it doesn't do 3ds games. None do, so far as I know.
There's a file you have to download to the sd card. This is the so called kernel. Just make a directory and put it there. The same goes for other rom files. When you load files to it, only files with '.nds' show up. All the files will still show up on a pc. Also they will show up when an emulator program is running.
Here's my dsiXL playing an nes game
Here's my 3dsXL playing Stella, an atari emulator
Pretty much, my 32gb got full with ds games. But on a friends 3ds we got it to play snes and genesis games.
Not terribly hard to do, it just takes longer to find the roms.
Also, its not 100% perfect. But the screen can be adjusted to your liking on these emulators.

No idea how to mod a DS, but I'll keep my eye on your thread so I know how to myself in the future.
And thank you
Now see that is what I'm talking about flojocabron. Also your DSiXL looks...really scratched up, any way to provent that from happening to my semi new 3DS?
Oh also what's the best card to use, you say the R4, Valkyrie-Favor says Acekard 2i, and my searching tells me DSTwo might be good too.
I want to play on my 3DS, I don't have to be able to, but I kinda want to since my DS is...kinda old and getto looking. I also want to cram as many games as possible onto said card (I'll need multiple cards I know), and I also want it to run the games fairly well/fast as if I'm playing them on their real consoles (some games I know will have glitches or errors). And if I am going to play on the 3DS I'm going to want good battery life. Some of these cards do effect battery life, though I have noticed the Acekard 2i seems to be good to your battery...
My dsiXL is fine. It has a screen protector. I let my cousin borrow it for a few months and his kids messed up the screen.
Good thing it has the protector! I would have been pissed if I didnt put one. Its just that My lazy butt hasn't replaced it yet.
I have about 80mb left on my sd card, from all those ds games! I did overkill on it. I think you'll do fine with an 8 or 16gb card. Just transfer them back and forth from your pc. I have so many games on mine, its hard to find games somtimes.
Most all ds games I've tried worked, some dont load the first time, but the second they work
Snes and nes games seemed a little tricky. Some dont play at all.
I never really experimented with them, since i dont have a pc anymore to download a whole buch of them. But when you find roms, there are multiple versions, so try them and see which work better.

Well when you say....DS games you mean electronic versions of the games you "own" right?
Yeah. It's nice to play patches like translations and difficulty increases on them.
I've never used an R4 card, so I can't compare it to the Acekard. I just know my card has been working great and worked with everything I've thrown at it, plus it has features most other cards don't. But I haven't been keeping up.
Playing DS games on a 3DS always looks terrible though. Too much bad scaling and filtering going on, I'd rather play them on an original DS than a 3DS XL. It's not that bad with 3D games, but a text adventure will hurt your eyes
About the SD cards - I'm using a 2GB card and haven't filled it up. DS games are 16 to 256MB, but most are on the smaller side. The only 512MB game I can think of is Love Plus Plus, a high school dating game It wasn't bad.
For Game Boy and NES ROMs, even a paltry 2GB will be more than enough. No need to buy a new card. That Atari emulator should run really well on DS, it might be close to perfect. Anything newer will be flawed, but if you're okay with that it'll be a good time.
And while I'm at it, may I recommend Quake I and II for DS? Someone actually managed to port those!

Finally managed to get an R4 off of someone on another gaming forum. I like it and while yes it does have it's issues, I'm still pretty happy about it. But now that I've seen the limitations of the DS, I want to go deeper into the rabbit hole. PSP hacking. How/where do I start? I have a fairly old PSP, the 1001 type but it has a 6.39 firmware and everything I can find on the internet says that is bad for hacking.
Is it possible to hack it with that version of firmware?
Any PSP on any firmware can be hacked at this point. Sony straight up stopped caring about the PSP. The only difference is whether or not it can be made a "Permanent" hack or not, and all that changes there is whether or not you have to run 1 file when you turn the PSP on from a cold boot (meaning NOT just from sleep mode, but all the way off). THAT is decided by hardware model, not firmware, and all 1001's can be made Permanent (which totally isn't necessary, but I personally like to).
But yeah, wololo has everything you need to know about PSP CFW.
