I try to avoid purchasing greatest hits versions. But for games that I've already owned for years I won't go re-buy an original version of them. Even though they stick out like a sore thumb I don't mind too much because my collection isn't for show or anything.

Makes no difference to me as long as I have the game and can play it. In the newer generations most of these "greatest hits" variants come with extra content and is fully updated in most cases so it has fixes that the vanilla release may have been plagued with.

Absolutely no Greatest Hits for me. GotY editions are fine so long as they don't have the ugly red Greatest Hits boxes. Since going mostly digital this is far less of an issue now.

I'm all in for the GOTY variants as well assuming the DLC extras are included on the disc.

+1

All original, all the time - though it could be argued that a "true" collector will have all versions of a game

Agreed. I do not buy "greatest hits" versions unless: (1) the "greatest hits" version adds features unavailable in the oringinal release; and (2) there is no "black label" version of the game with the additional content.

Most PS3 games that include additional content, such as game-of-the-year editions, legendary editions, ultimate editions, etc., have "black label" releases, and I consider tracking those versions down a nice collecting challenge. There are some PS2 games, such as Silent Hill 2 and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution, where the bonus content is only included in the "greatest hits" release, and while I own a few of them, I place them at the "end" of my collection so that they do not stick out from the "black label" games. (FYI, there is a "black label" version of DMC3: Special Edition.) Likewise, there are some PS1 games with extra control features, such as Resident Evil: Director's Cut Dual Shock Edition and Resident Evil 2 Dual Shock Edition, that I have or plan to add to my collection. Finally, the PS1 "greatest hits" version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy apparently contains some bug-fixes and works better with the PS2 and PS3; so, I hope to add a "greatest hits" copy of that game to my collection at some point.

Xbox 360 and those damn white labels and "platinum" labels!

Original had black labels at least.

Honestly, I was collecting games for about a year or two before I realized that anyone had an issue with this sort of thing.

I personally don't have a preference. The only thing that irks me is when you buy a used game and the disc doesn't match the case (Greatest Hits disc in a regular case, or vice versa) - this has happened to me a few times.
