Also, never sell any of the precious gems in your inventory. They're used in the damage calculations for summon spells.
Got through a pretty bad section of FFIX, Oeilvert and the desert palace. It seems designed to cause irritation whichever party you choose to use. Got a game over when I wanted to run from a specific battle and it just wouldn't let me. So annoying. It's not hard, it's just full of enemies with status changing spells, the dreaded mustard bomb and you have to get through with your B-Team.
Not convinced by Kuja at this point. He seems like they wanted to put Kefka in Sephiroth's body but he's just really bland and cliche, even for a jRPG villain.
I hated that place too. IX has some moments where it feels like they said, "Eh, this has been too pleasant so far, lets fuck with them". Luckily they are few and far between.
Also agreed on Kuja. His musical theme is pretty great though.

Yeah, I had a similar reaction to him when I first played through the game. But after a couple more play-throughs I realized he has a bit more depth than I initially gave him credit for. If you're still iffy on him by the end of the game, check out this article that a friend of mine wrote on why Kuja is actually quite the underrated villain: Kuja: The Most Underrated Final Fantasy Villain of All Time
