Can anyone recommend a VGA box for DC, PS2 and Saturn

Post by corn619 »

Ever since I got my HDTV I've been struggling to get a clean picture from my DC, PS2 and Saturn. I currently have them hooked up with S-video and while most of the games look ok the older ones look like crap like Ico its not even playable. Can anyone recommend anything to get the most out of my older games? It don't have to be a VGA box but maybe a upscaler or something. I know my games can look better, thanks in advance.

The VGA box for the DC that racketboy sells has worked great for me. It really gave my DC some extra life, though I upgraded from an RF adapter, so the difference may have been greater for me than it would be for you.

i upgraded to the dreamcast vga box from S Video and the difference was huge. i have component cables for PS2, and you should be able to find them cheapy (PS3 uses the game cables.) As far as Saturn, I have that hooked up with regular composite cables. As it is an older console, expectations should be a little lower and most 3-D games are pretty rough around the edges.

I've gone on upscaler benders in the past on these forums. Such as this one.

Since I posted that few things have changed. I did get an ambery encoder, it did do an okay job but the big problem was it didn't work with all my consoles/arcade boards (the Saturn for instance worked, but not my Playstation).

I'm now trying a video board that is designed, pretty much, for upscaling older JAMMA games for high def monitors (it's in the mail from Canada right now).

I've heard from people that the quality on them is 'passable', but I'm actually getting one of the new board revisions (first one they sent me didn't work, so they're sending me out another one from the new version) so I'm hoping the quality is better. If so, it'll be the easiest DIY yet.

The other option I've come across, since posting that in the summer, is a DIY set-up using a Holo3D video capture card.
Tobias made the rounds with this a month or two ago. Sounds like you can get amazing results for not a lot of money. But, finding the video card cheap is it's own problem

There you go. Don't say I never gave you nothing.

If you can, buy an xrgb2 [or xrgb2+], somewhere near the 200$ mark but most reviews that i 've read say that is the perfect upscaller for all consoles, still you will need to get some japanese rgb cables cause they have different wiring [well from the ones that we have here in PAL land :P]
