You know, I feel like I've written essays explaining why the XIII line of the FF franchise is worthwhile despite their flaws, but you pretty much summed up perfectly in just that one sentence why I like them and why I'll be playing Lightning Returns.

I'm still waiting on a review or two of LR before I make my final decision as there are some aspects of the gameplay the demo doesn't address (the countdown system, how open the world will be, if the countdown will restrict exploration and experimentation). Thanks to japan, I already know the ending is batshit insane so I'm not worried about plot.

Otherwise I'm sold on LR.
If I recall right you've barely played XIII-2? Cause I thought Snow was better there, it was Hope that tied him down so much. That said he was a little braindead too, but there was potential I think haha.

I've heard the same about the ending... not sure if that's a good thing or not. But yeah, how much more hilarious and crazy can XIII get at this point, let's find out lmao.

Yes, I can only speak for FFXIII and even then only so far. I have only played the demo of XIII-2. XIII-2 had a mostly new cast didn't it? Caius and Noel? Some chick dressed as a chocobo?

Snow isn't totally bad. From what I saw, he has some guilt underneath his brashness. It's just he quickly replaces that with just being brash and determined. He also looks like the winning entry in a "draw a douche" competition. Hope's motivations make no sense, there's no way he can justify his hate for Snow and I assume that in the end Snow saves Hope's life and they work it out. Vanille is just a vacuum and a McGuffin. I guess she was from Pulse and someone who was turned to crystal but came back. Otherwise, there's nothing to her.

1. Agreed on Snow... but thats his character, and he does grow from it. I wouldn't say he is any worse than Tidus or Irvine personally.

2. Hope has every reason to hate Snow, he blames him for his mother's death. Of course its not Snow's fault, but Hope is a kid, and it makes perfect sense to hate Snow from his perspective imo. You see a grown man tell your mom to go run into a battle, and she gets killed and he lives... and you are just a kid. Seems like plenty of reason to me.

3. Vanille has a lot more to do with the story than that, but like Sazh and Fang, you don't really learn anything about them until later in the game. She ends up being a lot more than Hope's support, and is as integral to the story as.... well, as each character.

I know I've said it before, but I really like XIII's cast. Its not their individual characters that drew me in, but how they are all actually involved in the story. Every character grows and changes, and has a reason to be on the journey. I'd much prefer Snow going back and forth with emotional problems than Quina fighting along our side because.... it wants to eat. Or Vaan just mixing himself into Ashe's business just because his brother was important, and then dragging Penello along because... I don't even remember.

Not that I expect to change your mind on XIII, but its either discuss the game with people who hated it... or don't discuss it at all

Tomb Fantasy? Final Raider? or maybe Lara Returns?

I'm sure this has nothing to do with promoting Tomb Raider Definitive Edition

On a side note, does this make Lightning more attractive or less attractive?

Kotaku sez not to play this one. I posted this because it's the first review I've come across reading my RSS feeds

"Positives: Brilliant Combat system, most fun I've had in an RPG menu in ages

Negatives: I don't like Lightning.

Should you play?: NO"

... seriously?

Almost the entire article is about the story and Lightning. Only in the very end does he touch on the actual gameplay, of which he had no complaints, other than side quests being a bit dull. Praise the combat gameplay, priase the out of combat gameplay, but dish it a "Don't Play" because of the story. Not even the entire story, jut Lightning.

To be fair, at least the reviewer lets you know their stance right off the bat, by basically opening with, "Oh great, another game with Lightning in it, I already don't like it"
