Does anyone have a solution to replace an obscure remote?

Post by BitFaced »

I recently picked up an old sound system (the REOC HT60 5.1) for cheap for most of the various things included like speaker cables, but it didn't seem to come with the remote, which is really annoying. There might be some universal remotes for it like the Elmak Oscar Pro:

But even with that in mind, is there any simple way I could get a remote for this thing?

Get a Logitech Harmony remote. They supports that model of AV receiver and can support just about anything else you own as well. They download the codes via USB so they're very easy to set up.
Used older models are going for about $50 on ebay. Well worth the price for what they can do (replace all your remotes with one).

(I did look for a compatible replacement remote for you, but nothing showed up anywhere)

Wow, just checked to see if they supported my old Pioneer LaserDisc player and they do...hmm...

I've been using a Harmony 880 for years now and they are amazing. Not only can they control everything you have, but you can program activities with your equipment such as watch TV, play playstation 3, etc. Then when you choose that activity the remote turns on the required devices, turns off the ones you don't need, and puts your tv and AVR to the proper inputs. Honestly, it makes everything great. If you have people over your house they won't have to try to figure out how to turn stuff on or what device goes to what input and such. These things are a godsend.

I know, I've asked about this on another forum and they've told me about the same product. Sounds extremely promising...
Can any model work as well, or with all of the codes? Because I've seen some cheaper remotes on eBay for around £30.

If you can't find a cheap nice used smart remote. It'd probably be worth throwing down for a small tablet with IR built in and then using software to do the remote business. Consider that a new Harmony remote is $100+ and a Galaxy Tab 3 is like $160. Upside to this is, the codes come from databases on the internet. Vast, vast databases. Most programs also can sync up to libraries and stuff, so it's pretty neat. Obviously, not the go to choice, but new Universal Remote prices are outrageous.

If you find a used one for your needs that's the cheapest bet ... probably.

I've been looking for a replacement Harmony 880 since mine is starting to malfunction after about 8 or so years of use (and abuse). The new Harmony remotes at the top of the line (which is what the 880 was when it was new) are around $250-$300. So, I am looking for a good condition, used 880 and I'm seeing them go for around $60, which approximately 36 British pounds. So, it's close in price. I think this would be your best bet.

Just as others have said, these things sync with an online database, so practically an code is available to these remotes and the software is the same for all the versions of Harmony remotes, so all the codes should work with all Harmony's.

Did you try searching for the remote's model number (not the AVRs model number)? Often times a remote will have it's own model number, different from the device's model number. I can't read that PDF, so IDK if it's in there or not. Usually it is, tho. If not, you should be able to find it somewhere.

Let's say the AVR's model number is AB123, but the remote has a model number "CD123". Instead of searching for "AB123 remote" on eBay or where ever, search for "CD123 remote". I've had luck doing this in the past.

I really did try that (on a procrastination binge). Google turned up next-to-nothing. I was able to turn up some HD images of the tiny, blue remote in question, but aside from some satisfied owners of said AV equipment there was no further information - even from the pay-for-replacement/compatible remote wholesaler sites.

In reviews, or on a forum? Perhaps he could post and ask one of these satisfied owners if there's a model number on the remote some where. All of my remotes have a model number printed on them, and it's almost always located on the bottom of the top side of the remote.
