I hate the 8th character of FFIX though, he's awful.
If you mean Amarant, I think I used him against Ozma (or maybe just the Fat Chocobo) the way I would use any good ninja: Chuckwagon-ing.
I did mean Amarant. He might be good in battle, I just thought he had an ugly design and was completely irrelevant to the entire plot. He wasn't even an interesting character to make up for it.

Yeah, that was my feelings on him. Shadow serves a similar archetype but is much better integrated into the story and has a more compelling characterization to him.

I'm at a bit where they've all been split up anyway. Now I miss Dagger.

I think I might have gone past Quina, possibly? I went to the marsh and saw him/her/it but nobody there seemed to want much to do with me so I went on to Burmecia.

You have missed Quina, but there are other opportunities to recruit him/her. I think you might need to catch a frog.

Quina was my favourite character to use in battle. The Limit Glove/Auto-Life skill combo decimated the mid-game for me. It can be a pain trying to get all the blue magic though.

Almost lvl49 on my dragoon in FFXIV. Going to level warrior next. My bard is ilvl79. Running coil t4 tonight with my static group. My lvl48 drg is only ilvl38, but once I hit lvl50 I've already got the gear to get me all the way up to ilvl75. :D

May start maining dragoon for coil and other FC activities. Like Titan extreme tonight. If I can get it to 50 before then. Going to be going at it right after work to level.

Made my way onto the outer continent and trying to find the Iifa tree. Very much enjoying this. It's a shame I know where stuff is heading (Necron) but the ride so far is cool.

One problem I have though is that the synthesis system has lead to me carrying around a load of old weapons and armor for fear they might prove useful later.

So I take it you've played through the game already? Or did someone spoil it for you?

And as far as carrying around lots of old gear to synthesize later, there's no penalty for having a ton of items, so why wouldn't you? And holding on to older weapons also comes in handy in Ipsen's castle later on.

I've seen my brother play it so I know about Necron, although it's hardly a spoiler for a FF game to have a shitty end boss jump from left field.

My problem with the synthesis is, I want to sell the surplus gear for cash. But every time I do I stop and think "What if I need X amount of peridots to make the best weapon?". And since I don't want to grind for more later, I don't sell and the inventory is inflates full of useless tat I'm never going to use or probably even synth. It's a minor issue, but it's just one that shows a lack of polish or streamlining. It needs a guide to be effective and I'm trying to stay away from gamefaqs as I go through this.

Progress though: Beat Soulcage in one hit (I love undead bosses with less than 10,000 health) and watched the ensuing barrage of CGI then went to Treno became a Tetra Master and watched FF1's antagonist burn Alexandria from a spaceship.

I've played through FFIX at least 8 times and I'm sort of ashamed to say I've never really used Quina that much.

I'd just hang on to your weapons for a while unless there comes a time when you really need money for some reason. Money shouldn't ever be a problem in this game anyway. Also, without saying too much, you'll want to hang on to one extremely weak weapon for each character.
There's a particular dungeon where an equipped weapon's strength is reversed.
Weak weapons become strong and stronger weapons do the opposite.

Thanks for the heads-up. I guess then there is some method behind it all. As I say, it is a very minor problem in an otherwise superb game.
