As far as I can tell, it's pretty much the same thing except the opening scene is different.

Squadron video would be awesome! But would you want to incorporate games that use SHMUP designs for only certain levels, like Captain America and the Avengers, The Death and Return of Superman, or Jim Power: The Lost Dimension in 3D?
You gave me a hell of a list there, thanks! I'd rather stick with games that are strictly shmup rather than stuff like Jim Power or Cybernator that have a shmup level here and there.

I gotta get the FF6 one out of my system first though. I've been dwelling about that one forever. It may upset some of the fanboys as I do not worship at the alter of Final Fantasy, so it takes some delicate phrasing so I don't come across like I hate the game.

Yeah, I happen to be one of those FF6 fanboys, haha. But I acknowledge and understand some of the criticisms, such as a lack of character exploration with much of the large cast, the translation issues, and the techincal glitches which can be found with relative ease. If you like the game, it'll shine through. If you don't, it will too. Just be yourself.

What about import shmups like Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie?

On the FF6 topic. Yes, be yourself. I'd much rather hear someone's honest, critical and unique perspective than another rant about how perfect the game is.

I'm not sure yet. I'd like to be complete and it'd be nice to fit everything into one video, but 30+ games into one video would make it reaaaaaaally long, and that defeats the purpose of the shorter to the point videos I try to do. They might have to be their own video.

Did somebody mention Final Fantasy VI aka the greatest game of all time aka the absolute pinnacle of artistic and aesthetic achievement? I am interested in hearing your thoughts on it.

I've come to really hate the SNES port of Out of this World.

As you've said, multiple times, the controls are stiff and whatnot. It actually plays horribly, and adds to the difficultly. If you play a version of the game other than Genesis or SNES, you find that the controls are MUCH more smooth, and playing the game becomes a lot easier as a result.

I first played Out of this World on the SNES, back in the day on a rental. I had the whole, "Oh, what?" reaction, too. Never got very far. Then a year or two ago, I picked it up for the SNES when I found it locally. I hadn't played it in so long. I was getting pissed off how tough it was, though.

So I decided to look into other ports. I've found the Genesis port to be as unplayable as the SNES port. I don't have an Amiga, so I tried the DOS version on my old Win98 machine. It plays GREAT! SO much better than the Genesis and SNES ports.

The only weird thing, the Genesis and SNES ports added music. The original version never had any music (except for the end). So if you're already use to playing with music, it's kinda weird.

I was able to find a console port that doesn't suck, though. Heart of the Alien for the Sega CD, which is a sequel to Another World (though not made by the creator), also includes a port of the original game. It plays just as good as the DOS version. There's also music added in, but it's not the same as the music in the SNES version. Since the SNES version was the first version I played, that will forever be the "correct" music for that game. But I just can't play the SNES port. I'll either play the DOS port, or when that's inconvenient I'll play it on Sega CD.

There's also the 15th Anniversary PC edition, that I have yet to check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another_Wo ... nniversary

I'm not a very big RPG fan and certainly not a big FF fan but I've always enjoyed this game. I think you were spot on about how the game is just big for the sake of being big.

Now for my minor criticism of FFVI, I always hated how the enemies are basically just cardboard cutouts. This was acceptable in older games but a lot of FFVI's contemporaries at least gave enemies a few frames of animation so you felt like you were fighting something that was alive.

It pushes the envelope in so many other areas, but drops the ball on that one. Although I imagine it was probably the fault of the art style and having so many enemies in the first place that animating them all would've been impossible or time consuming.
