I just have a quick question
I just started playing this game on dreamcast, and every time i do the work through forest 1 and 2, i quit the game, then I have to go through them all over again!

I got all the items saved and everything, but it forces me to go through them again, which seems a big time waster.

isnt there shortcuts, or am i doing something wrong?

Well the main storyline involves talking to certain people in the main office through the teleporter. You basically need to read what they say, go down and beat the 2 or 3 maps, come back up and talk to them and then save. Just beating the levels without doing that wont save the levels as unlocked. I'm not sure but I think if you just do the side-quests you can also make progress that way.
