Are either of these PS2s problematic with playing backups?

I have a slim (SCPH-70012) and a fat (SCPH-39001) model I can use. Which would be the better choice? I've heard some models are susceptible to laser damage.

The first few slim models have short lifespan laser units, so if you buy one, I highly suggest buying a fix chip. its very easy to install as long as you know how to solder. It's nothing but a deck of resistors.
