The focus is less on characters and more on units. So unit make-up and positioning is most important.
There are a total of 18 special characters you can get. They are more powerful characters than the generics, but the generics are necessary to round out your units.

The somewhat annoying thing about Ogre Battle is that the stat growth of the basic Soldier is geared towards melee, so when you transform them into a Wizard or Dollmage it can feel like a downgrade, since they won't have as good of Int as a Wizard/Dollmage that had been recruited (which includes the prepromotes you start with).

Yeah, they start a bit gimped. It is probably best just to buy/recruit a wizard when you get a leader who can.MrPopo wrote:The somewhat annoying thing about Ogre Battle is that the stat growth of the basic Soldier is geared towards melee, so when you transform them into a Wizard or Dollmage it can feel like a downgrade, since they won't have as good of Int as a Wizard/Dollmage that had been recruited (which includes the prepromotes you start with).

A decent beginner strategy is to use the initial Wizards you get, cock up their alignment, rush to City of Milano, get Tristan, and recruit Mages with him so you can skip dealing with the alignment. In the meantime you can train up a few Mermaids to Nixies (pretty easy to do) for your hit alls, along with some Doll Mages.Jmustang1968 wrote:Yeah, they start a bit gimped. Re: Together RPG - SRPG - Ogre Battle MotBQ - 1/11/14 -> 3/1
I think my entire army is overleveled at this point. There were a couple stages where I ground the enemy's army away while I was hunting for treasure. I think I'll have to start doing my treasure hunting post-stage with a flier or two. I figure I'll be ok if I just rush the boss and avoid most fights; my rep is pegged at max so I don't really need the liberation bonuses and I barely break even on tribute if I wait for a full cycle. But I haven't done Balmoran Ruins yet, and that requires you to liberate the entire map before you can get Saradin. I think I'll park my two evil units right next to the castle, kill all the enemy units, and let my good units liberate the rest of the map.
Here's hoping I can keep my army from running completely off the rails. But at some point I might give up; most of my units are fully promoted, so I could always pull out the Cherubim and Pixies into their own units and keep them a bit lower level so I can get those final promotions while letting everyone else go crazy (I'll also have to keep an eye on the CHA of my Demons).

I need to start this, but I'm super intimidated.

Don't be, it's totally excellent. And besides, it will give you something to do while sitting at home while the little lady recovers. And I'm so happy to hear she's doing well.Stark wrote:I need to start this, but I'm super intimidated.
Last night, I pulled off some serious bullshit. I have not yet finished the fight at the Kastolatian Sea, though at this point I only have the final boss left. Anyway, after accidentally losing my progress from two days ago, I rebuilt my armies a bit to be better suited to the task at hand and swiftly annihilated most of the enemy squads using mobile evil squads while good ones focused on liberating towns. After wiping the floor with the enemy(and evolving my first Cockatrice), I sought out all the towns and temples, knowing full well my reputation wasn't high enough to get the Brunhild. When Canopus' new good squad found the proper temple, I pulled a Lovers card, watched my rep rocket up just high enough, and got the Brunhild. Hell yes.

Don't worry I will, I just keep forgetting to load it on my DS.
