Nintendo Fusion

Post by kidfresh »

New console rumored. Check it @ http://tinyurl.com/knfkd4d

Just for curiosity's sake, what do you tech geeks think of the specs? If this rumor's true, you think it'll dig Nintendo out of the little hole they're in?

I'm not crazy about the idea of handheld and console merging.

This was mentioned in the "Nintendo is Hurting" thread. Personally it smells like the Sega Orbi crap to me. People are hoping for Nintendo to do something new and pull itself out of a slump and are jumping at shadows to find any evidence of it.

I'd rather hear some solid evidence before commenting on an idea that Nintendo may or may not even be doing. I don't think a handheld/home console hybrid is a terrible idea though. It all depends how they'd go about it.

I see. I apologize, I didn't know it was already talked about. I got sick of that thread a while back, haha.

Specs seem very much to be wishful thinking. Some of them could be fairly reasonable if the release date isn't especially close - the GPU would be current-gen Radeon, Power8 is due out mid 2014, so something derived from that could be seen as a current-gen PowerPC.

Putting a combined 6GB of RAM on that seems kind of odd when the other consoles have 8GB (unless it's supposed to work with the 3GB on the handheld?).

Then there are odd inclusions. For example, it's a cable/satellite box too? It has a model that uses holographic versatile disc (HVD), which has never had a commercially available implementation? One with 300GB of solid state storage? Supports up to four $150 Wii U Gamepads?

Unless Nintendo is thinking they have a market for a console setup that costs more than a Macbook Pro...just kind of seems unrealistic.

I think it also largely misses the point about specs anyway. It's less about having the best out there, and more about having something similar to what developers are targeting so that a solid port makes financial sense.

Lets not forget that according to those specs, the "Terminal" would still use the same awful PowerPC 750 Tri-Core that everybody whines about as being a huge weak link in the Wii U (with the GPU really being quite nice).

It'd be using it as a secondary CPU, the primary states an 8-core Power8 derivative (which would be a cut-down Power8, since it's a 12-core chip). I'd assume that they'd be including the PPC 750 in order to play Wii U and perhaps Wii software.

Seems like that would be awfully expensive to produce.

Custom Adreno 420-based AMD GPU
AMD doesn't own Adreno, it was sold to Qualcomm
2 130 mm DVGA (960 x 640) Capacitive Touchscreen
This implies both screens will be 4:3 and 5" diagonally, meaning a MAMMOTH handheld that dwarfs even today's XL versions
Nintendo 3DS Cart Slot
This needs at least one 16:9 screen
SDHC “Holographic Enhanced” Card Slot up to 128 Gigabyte Limit
dafuq? SDXC already supports 128 GB cards.
MEMORY: 4 Gigabytes of Unified DDR4 SDRAM CODENAMED KONG, 2 GB DDR3 RAM @ 1600 MHz (12.8 GB/s) On Die CODENAMED BARREL
Why would both DDR4 and DDR3 be required? Wii U emulation doesn't require its own RAM. And if it was for Wii U emulation why would it need its own codename? It's already a finished product.
802.11 b/g/n Wireless
Presumably a 2015-2016 console and it doesn't have WiFi-AC?
2 USB 3.0
Even Wii U has 4 USB ports
1 CableCARD Slot
CableCARD is only used in the US
4 Custom Stream-Interface Nodes up to 4 Wii U GamePads
WTF?
Two versions: Disk Slot Version with 60 Gigs of Internal Flash Storage and Diskless Version with 300 Gigs of Internal Flash Storage
So presumably it's a 64 GB SSD in the first case with 4 GB of that occupied by the OS, right? Then what's the second one, a 384 GB SSD? And the OS is now 84 GB?

Copied from top comment from www.reddit.com/r/nintendo thread on this topic. Brings up good points about how the creator of these specs missed some obvious stuff. this is almost certainly fake.

Glanced at the specs list and to me it looks more like a wishlist than a potential product.
