The AI also follows positioning rules. If there is someone that occupies the same location opposite him, and he is melee, he will attack them regardless.

Make Gilbert an evil one or ninja.

Yeah, regular hawkmen aren't too good. I like to just replace a knight with Canopus. You will have low sky and still have a powerful melee character.

Have you been liberating towns with high ali units? You need that rep high to get the Brunhild.

I ditched all of Canopus's followers and just made Canopus the leader of a regular squad, so I'd have Low Sky movement. Canopus has abnormally high stats for his class, which makes him good for the early game. As you go on he loses his shine, since he only has two attacks, so all your other units will start to outdamage him.

Yeah, I've been studying those positioning rules. What bothers me about this instance is that Gilbert is dead center in the back row, and the opposing angel and cleric were both equal distance apart with nothing in front of them(my wyrms had already ripped apart the two in front). By all accounts he should have gone for the angel, but he didn't for some reason. I guess I'll have to go the ninja route, since evil ones just don't seem worth it.

I think I'll do that with Canopus. I have a few squads where he could be interchanged easily, and then I'll just cannibalize his former squad and make adjustments to others as necessary.

And I've been trying to, but I haven't been seeing any real changes to my reputation. Whenever possible I try to let my Opinion Leader or what is now Aisha's squad liberate towns, as they both have the highest average alignment. I'll try to focus more on this through the Sea and afterward to see if I can get a big enough change. I can go back for the Brunhild, correct? And what are these chaos gates I've been reading about?

Chaos gates are extra maps with the sky knights as leaders. They can join you and are the most powerful human melee units. These guys destroy.

Yes, the Brunhild is not lost. There's only one instance of "must do this properly in the stage before the boss dies" that I can think of, and it's not gated by reputation or alignment.

There are four hidden stages which allow for recruitment of some powerful characters, and each one is accessed through finding a Chaos Gate on the map. A unit with the Brunhild equipped needs to find the Chaos Gate, which is similar to finding buried treasure.

Ok, so I definitely need to get my rep up. I guess Deneb will have to wait.

Forgiving Deneb and getting your rep up is a tough task.

Since Deneb isn't required for any ending, if you're going for a "I want every hero" playthrough most people wait until after they've gotten every other hero, then tank their rep and alignment for Deneb and the other evil recruitable, then use the last few maps (plus some strategically unliberated cities) to get their rep back up. There's a late-game map with high level neutral undead for getting ALI back up as well.

Ok you guys are way ahead of me. I've cleared mission 2 and I'm a bit more familiar with the units. I left Lans and Warren with their respective dudes as they are lev 4 and overleveled for these maps. I did bring Lans in on mission 2, and the only unit that gave me trouble on mission 2 was the Boss, which I softened up with my flying Valkyries unit (I just had to do it! Gryphon, Healer, my 2 Valks) then entered the Lans.

I really like the Healers, I am using all of them in mission 3.
So I noticed the class change. I played Tactics Ogre and I vaguely remember the constraints, I guess I must level my Fighters / Amazons and depending on their attributes (Str etc.) I can morph them into something else? I had a fighter that could become a caster-type (one from Lans unit, a lev 4 dude), but he actually had crappy Int compared to the ones on Lans' backrow unit so I didn't change the dude. Am I supposed to "home grow" any of these grunts or do I just get gifted with good ones later? In TRPGs you usually either get busted pre-made characters, or you just get crappy ones and need to grow your own powerful characters (I think the GBA Tactics Ogre was more of the "grow your own" type with a few story chars that kicked ass).

It's a combination of both. You'll get the chance to acquire much more powerful stuff later that you won't have to worry about, but for now you're stuck growing your own units, including your special characters, into various classes.

Also, Strength, Intelligence, etc., have no say in whether a character can become a certain class. It all relies on Charisma and Alignment. I'd say monitor stats to figure out which choices are best, but yeah, Cha and Ali are it. That said, over the course of the game you will likely find items that can boost stats. I've found a few HP boosts that I've used on my Opinion Leader, since it's game over if he dies.
