How Does Your Wife/Girlfriend Feel About Your Retro Gaming?

Because, face it. I don't think we're all lucky enough to have women in our lives who love video games as much as we do. So, is she supportive? Does she nag you about your love for that blasted Sega? Or, if she does love video games as much as or more than you do, tell us about that! And this isn't limited to girlfriends and wives. Tell us about any significant other you have!

As for me; my girlfriend doesn't really *hate* my video game hoarding/loving. She just doesn't let me play any games around her unless it's a two player game *she* likes. I tried getting her into Catherine for the PS3, because she's not into the x-bit graphic scene, and she likes Lifetime on TV, so I thought she'd be into the scandalousness of the story. She got bored of the puzzle parts, and I ended up doing them while she played everything else.

So, tell us about the relationship video games have with your significant other!

My wife not only allows it, she spoils me with games and systems at times. She's gotten me some pretty awesome stuff over the years including the Wii deluxe console that's black and came boxed with both Wii Sports games and Wii Motion Plus. She got me the full-boxed guitar edition of Guitar Hero III. She got me a PC. And so many different games.

But she really doesn't game at all herself, except for the occasional game of Snake, Whack-A-Mole mini-game on New Super Mario Bros. (DS), and Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

My girlfriend has only sincerely enjoyed *one* game; the first Spyro. And she's a sweetheart, so she'll support any endeavor I have. While she'll frequently call me a nerd, she'll still sit down with me and play some of the more colorful Super Nintendo games with a smile on her face.

And god damn it, she better. I can't tell you how many hours of my life have been burned into the abyss of a movie genre that is "Romantic Comedy."

My wife is not a gamer with the exception of some mario kart, mario galaxy, and flower. However she is totally cool with me being a retro and modern gamer, pawn shop hunter, and collector of games in general. Across multiple apartments and now back home has even let me turn our one spare office or bedroom into my "game room/office". I consider myself a really lucky guy with an awesome wife who let me have my own unique interest in gaming.

Also, I think the thread title should be "How Does Your Wife/Girlfriend Feel About Your Gaming" since to most people who don't game there's no difference between gaming generations . Perhaps the only extra "issue" that might come up, is how many machines you can have hooked up to the TV at the same time (an issue for European houses which don't have as big living rooms and thus space, for big TV stand furniture)

"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned for Sega" - Brodie from Mallrats. But no, I seriously lucked out in the girlfriend department.

When we first started dating around five years ago, my girlfriend really had no interest in gaming whatsoever aside from the occasional rounds of Ms. Pac-man or Galaga. That quickly changed, and now I feel like she might play even more than I do, since she never wastes time posting online or keeping up with gaming news.

She's played through titles like The Last of Us, Catherine, Clock Tower 1 + 3, D2, Haunting Ground, Resident Evil for the Gamecube, and Silent Hill 1 + 2. She's mainly interested in survival horror, and is currently loving the copy of Zombi U I bought her for Xmas. She also really, really likes Xevious and Candy Crush.

Her tastes are definitely more modern, and she rolls her eyes whenever she sees me playing a 'boring' strategy RPG, or catches me talking about how much certain games are worth on ebay now, knowing I'll never sell the majority of my collection. She also can't stand my inability to pass up something like a CIB Aura Interactor at a thrift shop, or if I get too many incoming packages in a row. It's nice having someone else to help keep my collecting bug in check though. I love her.

My girlfriend likes a few online games. We play PSO mostly and have been on Star Wars: The Old Republic kick lately. She plays The Sims 3 and used to be into the Black and White games.

As for retro games besides PSO she's played A Link to the Past and all of the 16-bit Sonic games. She'll try whatever two-player game with me, especially beat'em ups. Her favorite retro game is probably The Lion King on the Genesis.

She has a pretty good understanding of how important my hobby is to me as well, and I don't buy games very often anymore so that's not a problem.

This reminds me of a gamer female friend I have. We were playing munchkin at the university's cafeteria, and her boyfriend was rolling his eyes at having to sit there with her while she played with us. And I told her that usually for me it's the other way around
