Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Paper Mario
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Super Paper Mario
Super Mario RPG
That's funny. I've only played the last 3 games on that list

I think I should give Paper Mario another try, specially since i own it on the virtual console.

Bowser's Inside Story on the other hand I found kind of boring. I played about 2 hours of it and it didn't engage me. Super Mario RPG on the other hand did. Perhaps it's just because it feels more like a Square RPG (I actually enjoy the plot for example, and still remember many things from the game 13 years after I played it, while I don't remember almost anything from the other 2 which I played 5-6 years ago.), or who knows what.

But I guess I should give the real Paper Mario games a chance. Too bad the 3DS one isn't that good from what I've heard.

SMRPG made my summer of '96. I was renting it nearly every week until I got it for Christmas later that year (and yes, the strategy guide!)

Great moments -

Jumping on top of the shelves in the shop where you get the Cricket Pie
"Who do you think you are, Bruce Lee?"
The brief revisit of SMB Mario in Booster Tower
Moleville mine cart race
Various other Nintendo cameos (Samus, Link, etc.)
Having to work at the Marrymore hotel (but getting good tips)
The Power Rangers knockoff battle

Of course, probably the best part -
The Final Fantasy inspired battle with Culex; my inner geek LOVED this part
It was a good way for Nintendo to close the SNES era, it's such a classic.

I almost got Superstar Saga last weekend -- but for $20 I know I could probably do just a little bit better on the price.

If you thought SMRPG was funny, wait until you meet Fawful, the funniest, most quotable video game character of all time.

How am I supposed to resist another playthrough of SMRPG with all this awesome talk. I'll be humming Forest Maze all morning now.

Don't resist, just let it happen. And that song gets stuck in my head so easily. Just one listen, and it's in there for the rest of the day.

I bought the soundtrack for that song. I actually had it in the playlist for my wedding reception, along with Salsa de Pepperchau from Clockwork Knight, and several songs from the Zelda series.

That must have been one hell of a reception.

Just played some more Super Mario RPG just now. I think I know why I like it so much, and I will probably always like it more than the Mario & Luigi series.

I played through this section (please pay no attention to the idiot trying (and failing completely) to be funny)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijTQLSHb ... page#t=208

The explanation with Toad, the mini game, the catchy music.....it just reminds me too much of what it really is. A 90s JRPG. And JRPGs from the 90s are just too nostalgic for me :P

I think that's what made SMRPG special. Not just the dream pairing of Square and Nintendo so much, but just all the parts that broke away from the battles and the leveling up and all the RPG stuff. Classic Mario series inspired mini games and sections throughout the game just like that. Remember the 6 doors that had puzzles, battles, or action sequences at the end?

I sure do remember hating that section.

Isometric platforming sections. Blurgh

For what it's worth, all the Mario RPGs are full of stuff like that (Mini games and diversion I mean, not isometric platforming). I generally like that kind of thing.

It's not that I can't see what Mario RPG did right, it's just it all feels shallow and dated to me. I just don't see it as up there amongst the other SNES RPG greats - I much prefer Final Fantasy V, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound and even Final Fantasy IV, which I wasn't much a of a fan of overall.
