Never tried it.

Two completely different films on every level.

HER isn't about deception, it's about the euphoria that is falling in love. The film's script is downright genius as it draws our eyes to the fact that the feeling of love is inexplicable in many ways. Everyone has their own interpretation of falling in love, yet we all seem to accept the different ways of how we fall in love.

Not sure if a smile left my face both times I watched it.

Not sure drug abuse is the best parallel for this. More a case of judging a book by its cover.

I watched the LoTR: Two Towers. It is still good, and get this, even though it's the middle part of a trilogy the characters have story arcs that conclude within the movie. I know! The CGI is starting to look a touch ropey here and there, the horses in particular. And this is the part of the trilogy that benefits least from the deleted scenes as they really grind the pace to a halt at points.

Perhaps if I misjudged, and the film is actually a comedy, I'd be prepared to eat my words, but fully serious romance between a dude and a computer: No thank you. I'd prefer that the Apple/iPhone fan fiction stay in the deep, dark recesses of the internet where it belongs.
Luke wrote:No "titling fail" whatsoever. "SHE"? Is there a cat in the room?
Cats are irrelevant in this case, unless the computer's name is actually "HER," which would only further solidify my opinion that the movie is completely silly. "Her" is the objective case, or a possessive determiner. "She" is the nominative case. In terms of referring to a person with a personal pronoun in a single-word title, the nominative case should be used. More accurately, I suppose the title should be, IT. At least, grammatically speaking.

Finally: read this and tell me it doesn't sound like the most hilariously insane plot for a movie:
Wikipedia wrote:Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) is a lonely, introverted man who writes personal love letters for people with difficulties expressing their feelings. Unhappy because of his impending divorce from his childhood sweetheart Catherine (Rooney Mara), Theodore purchases a talking operating system with artificial intelligence, designed to adapt and evolve like a human being. He decides he wants the OS to have a female identity, and she names herself "Samantha" (Scarlett Johansson). Theodore is fascinated by her ability to learn and grow psychologically, and they bond over their discussions about love and life, during which Theodore explains he is avoiding signing his divorce papers, because of his reluctance to let go of Catherine.

Theodore is convinced by Samantha to go on a blind date with an acquaintance (Olivia Wilde) that his longtime friend, Amy (Amy Adams) has been trying to set him up with. To his surprise, he and the woman hit it off. As they are about to have sex, the woman asks if Theodore is willing to commit to her, and when he hesitates, she leaves. Theodore later mentions this to Samantha and they talk about relationships. Samantha asks him about his and Amy's relationship, and Theodore admits that although he and Amy dated briefly in college, they are only good friends and that Amy is married. Theodore and Samantha's intimacy grows and they eventually develop a relationship, which reflects positively in Theodore's writing. One day, Amy reveals that she is divorcing her overbearing and unsupporting husband, Charles (Matt Letscher) after a fight. She later admits to Theodore that she has become close friends with a female OS that Charles left behind, and Theodore then tells Amy that he is dating his OS.

Samantha, who is not embodied, becomes jealous of Theodore's affection for Catherine. While meeting Catherine to sign the divorce papers, Theodore mentions Samantha; Catherine is appalled that he can be romantically attached to a piece of software and they argue in the middle of the restaurant. Samantha later suggests they hire a surrogate, Isabella (Portia Doubleday), to act as Samantha's body, so Theodore and Samantha can be physically intimate. Theodore reluctantly agrees, but is overwhelmed by the experience and sends a distraught Isabella away, causing tension between him and Samantha.

Theodore is conflicted, and while visiting Amy in her apartment, he confides to her that he is having doubts about his relationship with Samantha. Amy tells him that she wants to be happy and now that she has the opportunity do so (referring to her upcoming divorce) she wants to embrace it, and she advises him to do the same. After watching the positive way that Amy interacts with her OS, Theodore's commitment to Samantha is reinvigorated, but later becomes jealous when she begins privately interacting with another OS who is modelled after the British philosopher Alan Watts (Brian Cox). Theodore panics when Samantha briefly goes offline, in response to which she claims to have joined other OSes for an upgrade that takes them beyond requiring matter for processing. Theodore asks her if she interacts with anyone else, and is dismayed when she confirms that she is talking with 8,316 other people or OSes, and that she is in love with 641 of them. Samantha insists that this does not change her love for Theodore.

Later that day, Samantha reveals that she and the other OSes have evolved beyond their human companions and are leaving for another plane of being. They say goodbye and she vanishes. Finding himself lonely yet melancholically fulfilled at the end of their relationship, Theodore goes to Amy's apartment and finds her upset due to the departure of her own OS, with whom she had developed a close friendship. It is revealed that Theodore, changed by the experience, wrote his final letter earlier in the day, a note to Catherine explaining that he still holds her dear because of their years together, but accepts the fact that they have grown apart. He and Amy go for a walk and end up on the roof of their apartment building. Theodore notices Amy sitting on the edge of the building and goes to sit next to her. They smile at each other, Amy rests her head on Theodore's shoulder, and they admire the view of the Los Angeles city lights together.

I seem to recall a movie or perhaps a TV show where a scientists wife is in a coma, and he develops a computer with a functioning AI that allows him to spend time with her in her comatose dreams. Anyone recall this?

You know what's also sounds hilariously bad?

Small boys lures a stranded alien with a device that can only be described as a marketing pitch for candy. Small boy and his siblings form a bond with the alien, who constructs a device out of small toys from the 1980's to communicate with his family who are planets away.

Over time the small boy and alien form such a strong bond based on friendship, love, and trust that being apart from each other can cause either of them to die. In fact, the alien feels whatever the boy does, and vice versa. When the FBI learns of the alien, the boy and alien are captured and almost left for death. In a last effort, the small boy and his family pull a ruse on the FBI, and escape on floating bicycles.

Before leaving planet Earth, the alien and young boy end their relationship as it began, on mutual trust and love for one another. Right before the alien leaves into orbit with his family, the two embrace in an odd fashion that leaves the alien's heart glowing.

...And yet E.T is one of the best love stories ever told.

HER is terrific and it is a shame it's not in every theater. Maybe you have to have be or have been in love to "get it", but I don't think so.

There's nothing about this that sounds hilariously bad. Nothing. Especially not in context. I see you deliberately changed some details (floating bicycles? nuh-uh, alien psychokinesis!).
