Yeah black knights are alright. Probably not as good as ninjas.

This game is one where I feel a guide enhances instead of cheapens the game.

Is a great walkthrough. Graphical maps that show you were buried treasure is.

You can also go back to lake jansenia and get werewolves and raven men (low alignment hawk man like canopus).

Werewolves are a great early 3 attack class, but are just a soldier during the day. Raven men are solid melee for low aligned parties to give them low sky flying.

Make sure to revisit stages for recruiting and/or special items as necessary.

Nope. Ninjas are better in every way. The problem with the promote is he has a magic attack in the back row and terrible INT (Ninjas have better INT growth if you want to use their spells) and he only has two attacks in the front row.
I did manage to recruit a couple of undead(a pair of ghosts) in the Pogrom Forest, but I don't think they can ever upgrade. I like the Nightmare ability so I've stuck one in the back row of Warren's squad.
Undead and Golems don't have promotions, but they have better versions. The nice thing about undead is if you are willing to react to the incoming enemy squads (avoid clerics and angels) then you have literally invincible units.

Ok, cool. Most of my evil leaning fighters who have reached that level have been turned into Ninjas, so I'm glad I made that decision.

The other nice thing about that ghost is that he came at level 9 when everything else is level 5. I'm currently using him in the rear but on the open right side of Warren's unit, while Warren and another Wizard are blocked by a Griffon. That way, I'm hoping at least some attacks get targeted at the ghost and whiff as a result.

I intend to just play it out and come what may.

I beat the witch Deneb and am currently paused in the middle of the Slums of Zenobia. I've been swatting back the flying enemy squads and am firmly between levels 5-10 with my primary squads(I have some low level units in reserve that I hope to stick in the backranks at a later time so they can get alignment boosts from the level difference), so hopefully I'll be getting access to the first or second tiers of new jobs with certain characters soon.

Unfortunately it appears that some of my wizards have gone off the deep end with their alignments, so now there are only a couple that will end up being Mages. And meanwhile, I have to come up with a way to boost other characters' alignments easily, because some of my knights aren't where they need to be to become paladins. While I understand the system's place and get what it means for certain classes, I really don't like the smaller windows that some classes get for changing into certain things. And the women's class/alignment tree is a joke. There is one evil class. At least males get the choice of ninjas and wild men if they're totally evil, and wizards or beast masters if they're sort of evil. Evil women are witches and that's it!

Truth be told, I think I'm only really annoyed by this because it's my only complaint in what I think is otherwise a wonderful game.

Yeah, ogre battle 64 better fleshes out the female class options. What makes it even worse is that I dont like the witch class all that much. So they mostly become Valkyries and clerics.

Unit and alignment manipulation is crucial. You cant let high align units beat up on clerics and knights too much.

Are your wizards too low or too high aligned? Once you go below 10 it is tough to raise alignment. I did that on accident to Warren once and it took me a long time to promote him.

I started my game up last night. I decided to go with the PS1 port. The load time delay to start battles is annoying. However the graphics are nicer and the challenge seems a bit tougher. I hear they upgraded the AI some and my units were doing less damage. I also noticed several of the unit sprites have changed.

I beat the first 2 stages, grabbed the herostar and gnomish nugget. My initial class makeup was unique. I let my wife answer the tarot questions and I got lucky as I received the hero class with 3 frontal attacks. I receieved a bunch of Beast Tamers and hellhounds.

Besides Lans and Warrens units I had:
2 clerics
2 valkyries
2 knights
1 samurai
3 beast tamers
3 wizards

No witches, ninjas, or doll mages

I also don't care for the witch. They suck to fight but suck to use.

I have two wizards who are too low(one has reached 0, the other is around 8), and Warren is trying to be. He's sitting in the mid-20s but is level 8 or 9, so I am trying to get him in fights against stuff he can level from without taking too much of a hit. I'm thinking I might try going to Pogrom Forest and wandering around to fight undead for a small boost, though the 0-level guy might just be screwed and have to become a backrow ninja.

And your makeup is similar to mine, only I had 1 valkyrie and 3 clerics at the start. I have ninjas and a doll mage now, but I had to make them the old fashioned way.

Backrow ninja isn't too bad, since ninja master has a hit all. My suggestion for keeping Warren in the black is to remember that alignment/charisma changes only happen when he kills a unit. If you manipulate tactics you can potentially get it so he doesn't get any more kills personally. If an enemy gets low you can switch to Strong and Warren will start attacking the high HP guys. If a super evil unit is low then switch to Weak to let him get the kill and bump his ALI up a smidge.
