My mixed opinions on the game aside:

I remember stuff like DKC coming out, and really not being very impressed with the digitized style that everyone seemed to be really into at the time.

Yoshi's Island didn't end the trend that would continue on into the next generation with 2D games badly aping 3D ones with digitized graphics, but it did do a lot to prove that 2D gaming could still produce gorgeous results and that the future didn't necessarily have to be a 3D only one.

Another fine video, thanks for posting.

I was never a huge fan of Yoshi's Island, not that I dislike it at all. Calling it "Super Mario World 2" threw me off big time when that game first game out tho. I remember renting it and thinking, "What the fuck is this!?" After the realization that it's an entirely new game, and sequel by title only, it's not so bad. I've always been a fan of the graphics. What a nice hand drawn art style.

But my god, that fucking crying baby! If there was a hack that removing the crying baby, I would probably consider hard patching my cart! Meh, maybe a little extreme, but yeah.

I've never finished Yoshi's Island. I made it pretty far, but lost interest. It's one of those games tho that I really wanna go back and give another shot at.

To be honest I've never finished it either and 2D platformers are one of my favorite genres. It's got a wow factor to it at first, but half way through it wears off and I lose interest.

The tagged on "Super Mario World 2" title always struck me as a bit underhanded. That was a marketing move by Nintendo's foreign offices though, so not really anything I can fault the designers for. In Japan it's simply known as Super Mario: Yoshi's Island.

It's funny because I think the lack of confidence they showed by giving it the SMW2 label ultimately hurt the game since many people were turned off by the changes that wouldn't have been an issue had they not called it SMW2 in the first place.

To me it still did come across as a SMW sequel, maybe that's a psychosomatic kind of thing where I've fallen victim to just going with whatever Nintendo wants me to think, but... goombas, koopas, shy guys, invincibility stars, similar controls and response time, I don't know, it worked well enough for me to see it as a sequel.

Nice, a new video and from a series I'm very fond of.

I love Sparkster, it's a solid platformer that goes back to the roots of Rocket Knight Adventures after the somewhat mediocre Sparkster: RKA2. I certainly don't dislike that game but it obviously wasn't given the same level of TLC in development.

However, Rocket Knight Adventures spanks them both in my opinion. There's never a dull moment and the difficulty is just right. The graphics aren't just good for the Genesis but the 16-bit generation in general. It's sequel which was handled by a different team however, not so much.

I also always felt the SNES Sparkster started out strong, but the level design gets a bit dull later on. It just doesn't quite have the same heart as RKA. That game felt like it had something to prove.

I think I gotta agree with that, I haven't played RKA as much as Sparkster, but I think I prefer RKA for the reasons you stated. If I had to make a list of Genesis/Megadrive "essentials" RKA would definitely be on it.
