Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Best black friday sale out there. Guild Wars for $5.

Post by Mozgus »

2nd best sale I saw was L4D for $20 but it only lasted 60 seconds on amazon, so it doesn't count.

Also the expansion is $5 too.

This is by far the best (or only enjoyable) MMORPG ever made. Don't pass it up. It wont consume your life. It's just plain fun in moderation, with a good mature community. Again, there are NO monthly fees. You have nothing to lose besides $5. You won't be missing out on too much. There's still the two other standalone games Factions and Nightfall, but with Prophecies and EotN paired together, you basically get all of the charm of the beginning of the series, with all the refinements of the final title.

Looks like a pretty good game, wish I had time for those kind of games. They look really fun to play.

See? That's the problem. That statement right there. If you have time to play any games, you have time to play GW. It's not like the other MMOs. It's got the fastest pace. They don't try to stretch things out over 1000 hours. It's not a grind at all. The lvl cap is 20.

I'm going by articles of other MMOs I've read in the past. For example Final Fantasy 11 I read it takes forever to level up. In other MMOs people being immature, stupid and vulgar. I've never played Guild Wars or any MMO to be honest but they get a bad rap for being intimidating and level grinding heavy. I love RPGs but my game time is limited due to work and family it took me 2 years to finish Dragon Quest VIII. I've been looking into Fallout 3 which I think has MMO elements to it. Guild Wars looks cool though.

Nah, Guild Wars is pretty short. You can get a character to the max level in a matter of days when you're new to the game. Biggest problem I had was that, once I was level 20, there was nothing else I really wanted to do. It's an interesting title, and I should probably log back in just to see what items I've gotten over the years, but I wasn't really thrilled with it. If you've never tried an MMO, it's not a bad choice. $5 ain't that much, either.

Ugh please ignore Fallout 3. I got bored in 10 hours. Spoony says it best:

Don't even think about picking that over guild wars.

Oh for fuck's sake, that's the point! They WANT you to hit max level in a few days! There's a reason why it even offers a dedicated PVP mode where you're instantly lvl20. Leveling is NOT part of the game! That's what makes it so great. You wont fall behind your friends if you dont play as much. You don't play it to get stronger. You play it to acquire new, more complex gear, create well balanced and easily swappable skill sets, explore new areas (which are always beautiful, seriously the game has fantastic map design all throughout. I've made very nice wallpapers from just simple screenshots.)

And then there's the PVP itself, which is really what the RPG stuff is training you for. But there's absolutely no reason for anyone to play the RPG mode if they dont want to. For $5, this is still a fantastic buy for online action fans alike. The RPG mode basically unlocks skill use for PVP, but PVP does allow you to simply purchase those same skills with your "victory money" if you could call it that.

GW is like MMO-lite. It's very light on the whole grinding thing. It plays out essentially like your run of the mill JRPG. Grinding is heavily discouraged by giving lots and lots of perks for completing quests. All the quests are linked into an overarching storyline.

Each of the cities acts like a hub where you can interact with other players, buy/sell equipment, organise adventure parties and accept quests. Once you have your party set up you can then embark into the PvE areas where you can fight monsters and complete quests. In these areas you can only interact with the players in your party. Each of the areas is generated solely for you and your party. IT has it's up and it's downsides. You don't get anybody griefing or kill stealing, but it does feel awfully lonely, especially when you can't find a party and are relying on the CPU controlled 'henchmen/heroes'.

Once you have got a character maxed out, the main focus of the game is to gain elite skills from the various boss monsters and better equipment. These skills and equipment you take into the PvP side of the game. You create a PvP character at level 20, so you don't have to bother leveling it up, you just use the skills and equipment you have unlocked in the PvE side of the game.

For $5 there's a hell of a lot of game there, plus the best thing about GW is that there's no subscription. So you can buy it and play it as much or as little as you want as long as the servers keep running and never have to worry about a monthly fee.

Thaaaank you. All true. The best comparison I can ever draw to GW is Phantasy Star Online. It operates in the same way, although GW rewards you at a much faster pace. It's true that finding parties for quests is hard, but finding them for missions is super easy. Quests are the text based, typical MMORPG types, but Missions have actual cinematics with voice acting, and the game has a very effective party making system for them. You will always find a group. I've also found that it's entirely feasible to just outright skip the quests and only do missions. That's the best way to play if you're the type who gets bored with this genre. The only other quests I do are ones that teach you more skills.

Yeah, I play it the same way. I wish there was a central system in place where you could say "looking for X adventurers for X quest". It would sort them automatically for quests in your current area and you could just automatically form parties for people looking to do the same quests as you. That would be great. It would make the PvE so much more streamlined.

I think the only reason people are afraid of playing GW is the negative stigma that all the other MMORPGs have. Yet GW doesn't suffer from any of these flaws, like the immature user base, griefing, grinding, subscription fees.
