Also, got an ipad screen protector that I'm going to try to cut and fit to the gamepad touch screen. I expect that to be a royal pain. I really wish you could just walk into any store and find Hori screen protectors.

So now I have to decide what to play first, New Super Luigi or Wonderful 101
How much did they cost?
Thirty bucks each, course that's Walmart pricing. I suppose it's possible I could have gotten them cheaper elsewhere

Wonderful 101. Might as well play the more unique game.

There is a pattern of "weaker" sells more , of course its not a law but its just how it has been going.
Hm..not really, I kinda just went over that. If anything consoles in the middle of the spectrum sold the most.
One thing for sure is that the highest spec never sold the most.
This is true but a misleading statement, and Game Boy Advance would be a notable exception.
Saturn was quit on
Not really relevant. Still was outsold by superior consoles regardless if it was abandoned or not.
and a Dreamcast was released , so here we have 2 consoles in the time from of 1 console for N64 and PSX .
That doesn't really work, because you could say the same with the PS2. There will always be overlap. Dreamcast was clearly a different generation than the Sega Saturn and by proxy the PSX and N64. Just like the PS2 was clearly different from PSX and by proxy n64 and Saturn.
The Snes had just 1 competitor with 2 years in release time difference (and we know how much difference that made back in the day, N64 -> Dreamcast) .
Maybe it is because I just woke up from a nap, but I don't really understand what this means.
The Neo-Geo , philips CD, 3DO were niche .
Philips CDI, 3DO and Jaguar arguably failed because of how crappy they were as hardware, so it is still very relevant to the subject. Regardless, if they were omited or not, it wouldn't really make a difference, because the Saturn still sold the least by a large margin, and it would have sold the least by a large margin even if it had been supported.

If we were to omit the Neo Geo, that would make the SNES the strongest console of its generation, which would make the statement of the console with the strongest specs never wins false.
I think the NES had somewhere around 5 years difference between it and the Atari 2600.
It competed with the Atari 7800, which it was stronger than it by a lot, and that did make a large difference.
One thing we both agree on is that software was always the selling point and it does not have to do with specs . So if Wii U gets the better games, Wii U could end up being this generation winner.

We both agree to that to an extent, but I feel like my analysis on the topic didn't quite make it across.

For instance, software wasn't "always" the selling point. As I mentioned before, the Wii is the exception to this rule. The Wii's selling point was not its software, nor did it even have the best software legitimately, though people are free to disagree on that subjective point.

The Wii sold the most because of its hardware. Again, you take away the motion controls from the Wii, and it sells even worse than the Gamecube did. People didn't buy the Wii to play Wii Sports, people bought the Wii because Wii Sports had motion controls.

Onto the next point, I did say that software matters the most, but it is unrealistic to say that the Wii-U will have the best software. If we look at all the consoles that sold the most with the exception of the Wii, all of the other consoles horded the major 3rd parties. Nintendo will not do this, nor have they done it in 20+ years.

Having the best first party support (debatable) isn't the same as having the best software. The major 3rd parties all like Microsoft and Sony better from a PR perspective, as well as probably prefer designing games on their hardware. Microsoft and Sony also have better relations with indie gaming companies as well. Nintendo is still weak in the 3rd party department in many ways, and is projected to be weak again.
As for the PS3 I doubt it will sell another 20m units to match the Wii's . The PS3 sold around an average of 11m per year when it was all the rage. Now the ps4 is out and about everyone who wants a ps3 got one or will buy used from people selling to get a ps4. It could happen, but not with a $100 price difference between it and PS4 .
The PS3 still is all the rage. PS3 might just had its best year, and it is still having big games come out in 2014.

The PS3 will be sold cheaply in retail, people will not necessarily have to buy it off the market. PS3 will get a price cut for sure in the near future (another one).

Also, the PS2 and PSP all sold a lot even after their successors had come out, if anything there was a spike in sales for those respective systems.

20 million is a lot of units, but it is not plausible, and the PS3 will be on the market even after big games are made for it. Regardless Nintendo has made a much larger profit selling Wii's than Sony did selling PS3s, but in terms of raw numbers, Wii selling the most of its generation is not a sure thing.

The PS3 is not a dead console like the 360 will soon be.

Scribblenauts Unlimited is $20 at Wal-Mart if that's up yr alley. The other 2 you got at the normal market price, couldn't have done better at a retail shop I don't think so no worries, though Super Luigi is $25 on amazon.

THis is what I was talking about. Let alone all the horror stories about the dev-kits and sales, the fact that they used an underpowered processor just to make sure it's not too loud for "mom" is proof enough that Nintendo, as amazing as it is in software development, doesn't know shit when it comes to designing hardware. How hard is it to set a price point and go for the best hardware possible that money can buy?

Well, at least Nintendo hardware is typically stable and almost never needs to be replaced.

Oh yeah, I guess their hardware team is really good when it comes to that :)

I read a dozen or so "Iwata asks" yesterday. This put a whole new perspective on things. I also read that huge GameCube history article. Give it a read to see Nintendo's philosophy.

They don't design hardware and games like any other company. Intentionally making the system quiet is a reasonable goal for them. Also, they actually do not focus on third party games. They have openly admitted that they design the console to make their own games, and allow third parties to come to them if desired. People with design decision power such as Miyamoto have come out strongly against multiplatform games. They simply don't want them. They want unique games that use unique features of their system. So, it doesn't matter that their system is slightly weaker, since they don't want the big western publishers to dump their multiplatform games on their system.

I respect them for trying to make their product quiet. While I don't own one anymore, that's one think I loved about the retina MacBook Pro I had. The fans basically never spun up to an audible level the whole year I used it. Even when stressing the CPU for hours by encoding videos.
