As a quick aside(I don't own any of the most recent consoles, and I don't really play modern fighters these days...or modern games, truth be told), but why not also try to bolster it with discussion?
Let's say you pick the latest Mortal Kombat as a game to play. Well, we've got lots of old school MK fans here, so if you get a conversation going on the series in general, you might manage to drum up more interest in seeing how the modern title works.
I likely won't participate in the games themselves, but I'd be more than happy to discuss them and help get others interested in joining you.

Re: Racketeer Weekly Fight Nights: Resurrection?
I am totally on board with that, and absolutely LOVE talking shop in FGs, I just didn't wanna annoy people by spamming what some who are not interested in a particular game could consider 'inane conversation' in this thread... But perhaps this was an irrational fear of mine.Ack wrote:As a quick aside(I don't own any of the most recent consoles, and I don't really play modern fighters these days...or modern games, truth be told), but why not also try to bolster it with discussion?

I can definitely start posting details about games, talk about it's competitive history, share stories from tournaments I have entered for it or drop cool tech/combo vids for people to consume before playing
Thanks Ack, I can definitely run along those lines.
Also, touching back on what dsh mentioned.
Maybe instead of just picking 1 game and sticking to it, i can pick a theme and stick to it, like: (exapmles) Namco Night (Tekken, Soulcalibur), SF Night (SF4, HDR, 3SO, SSF2T), Anime Fighter Night (BB, GG, AH, MB, AQ), Team Fighting Night (MVC3, KOF13, Origins, TTT2), Capcom off-beat night (non-SF capcom fighters), 3D night (DOA, VF, Tekken, SC) and so on...
I think that could give diversity enough to remain interesting to many, also give us multiple games to talk about at once and so on...
Hm. I guess we'll see

This entire forum is one giant inane conversation made up of about 40,000 smaller inane conversations, so I wouldn't sweat it.cha cha wrote: I just didn't wanna annoy people by spamming what some who are not interested in a particular game could consider 'inane conversation' in this thread.

Re: Racketeer Weekly Fight Nights: Resurrection?
I have no interest in fighting or watching people I don't know. Even worse, as we slowly get to know you, the last thing I want to hear after winning a match is, "Actually, you beat my 8 yo sister Alisha in that match."
For those joining you at yr place or just friends online at their own place - an account would be good, we can get to know them and that lends itself to remembering who they are and associating their fight style. I don't have a fighting style, but i'm pretty ok at reactionary and defensive fighting - this allows me to lose to someone terrible like noise, or to win against someone really good like sevin. Right now, i'd have no idea how to remember the styles of strangers or randoms, so aside from there not being a personal attachment, there's that piece to.
Dsh is right, we usually had 3-6 guys a night and really, that's perfect - any more than that and it's too long between rounds. This was from a pool of about 15 total and even if we couldn't make it, there were posts here talking about it, so we could see how it went.
to noise's point - "most" of us are married, some w/kids, w/full-time jobs, other hobbies, so most of us it's going to be a: ok, wife is reading a book, kids are down to bed, i've taken care of this, ok, some time to game, let's see if folks are fighting tonight in the fight night club. I'll never accurately commit more than probably an hour in advance - unless it were like some bigger deal where we advertised it as some racketboy double elimination tournament for the ages.
Lastly, as I said before, there's been like 25 games mentioned. If you run a poll and narrow it down to say a list of 10 or 12, i'd gladly buy them all. I won't buy all 25 knowing there's a chance many won't get played, particularly pricey imports. My reality is I only play new fighters online w/people I know, otherwise i'll play Garou.

Re: Racketeer Weekly Fight Nights: Resurrection?
Haha, I remember watching combo vids in the early 2000s is what got me so heavily into Virtua Fighter. I had played the earlier VF games but never really dedicated time to them, since I hadn't owned any Sega consoles growing up. But when I started watching vides of combos and juggles with Lau, I really got the itch and started playing VF4 heavily.
Please, discuss away! Le's discuss our thoughts, swap stories, offer strategies and techniques. It might make us better players, and it will definitely be a lot of fun.
As for the idea of themes, the only suggestion I have is not to go overly broad. For instance, focusing on 3D is a bit much, because while there's DOA, VF, Tekken, and SC, someone else might bring up Last Bronx, Toshinden, Tobal, Bloody Roar, or even Ballz. Heck, a non-SF Capcom night might end up with some folks focusing on the Vs series, while others discuss Cyberbots or Red Earth. I just don't want to see things end up a big mess.

Re: Racketeer Weekly Fight Nights: Resurrection?
I kind of think it would make more sense to just have a general Fighting Game Discussion thread rather than muddling up what is intended to be a thread for organizing dudes to play new games together online. Just my 2 cents.Ack wrote:Haha, I remember watching combo vids in the early 2000s is what got me so heavily into Virtua Fighter. Re: Racketeer Weekly Fight Nights: Resurrection?
Ah, see, I thought this was more like a SHMUP of the Month or Together RPG thread.
Re: Racketeer Weekly Fight Nights: Resurrection?
Ack- Well to be fair the restrictions of the themes would be 'playable on PSN' which severely limits the list. I don't think we'll be diverging from the PS3 path for the time being.
. Those of us playing locally on the 'community' account all have specific characters we pick, and it is up to you if you wanna log into twitch and see who is playing or ask in twitch chat if you can't load the video and be on PSN simultaneously.
As far as not knowing who you are or will be facing... I have already thought about adding little player bio's for who is showing that night, I was planning to list (even for my locals) their name, PSN id aside from the community account, characters they play in the featured games and relevant online rankings if applicable. Will this help on that front?
As far as the player pool, yes, as I also previously stated, around 3-5 RB'ers a night is what I would like to see. I do talk about how matches went... to the one person who comes for them so far. Until this becomes a more regular thing for more than just TSTR, I'd refrain from speaking on anyone else's game play until they get to know me better. I wouldn't wanna come off like I am criticizing their game or talking down to them, because then we'd be departing from a casual theme to a competitive one and I don't think that matches the wallpaper around here, not yet at least.
I think we'd be hard pressed to name more than 12 viable fighters that work on PSN, not without going into irrelevant outdated versions of games like vanilla SF4 and vanilla MVC3 etc. That people actually want to play, but I can make an official poll if people feel it'd help solidify things.
and lastly, down the road I'd LOVE to do a tournament with a free entry and prize I donate, amongst only RB'ers. I think it'd be fun to watch how some of you buckle under pressure and would love to see the salt being slung around the chat for that stream lol. So, yea... that WILL be coming once we develop this a little more.

Re: Racketeer Weekly Fight Nights: Resurrection?
Added a poll, will work on sprucing up the OP with more useful intel. (Everyone can vote up to 10 times, restricting it would unwise. I just chose the 10 most relevant games right now. Poll can be reset periodically, as games are added or subtracted)
Moving forward I will try to speak a little on the games chosen for that week and the players who will be joining us.
