Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2014 (January - Blazing Star)
finally got this running w/ help from Exed. Made it to the 3rd boss on one life, and then beefed it hard. 980k...
I do have a question though. Have any of you guys gotten any of these items that makes the announcer say "BONUS!" yet?

I have, but I guess I haven't got the ones that supposedly give you 50K each, 3-5 million by the end of Stage 3, and a happy ending.noiseredux wrote:finally got this running w/ help from Exed. Made it to the 3rd boss on one life, and then beefed it hard. 980k...

Right, back at my normal laptop now, will try and post an initial score in the next day or so.
Also, I see that the first heated debate of the new year is about autofire. Some things never change!
For the record, I'll throw my two cents in again:
Button-mashing is easiest if you're playing on an arcade cabinet or using a decent arcade stick, i.e. direction stick in one hand, while your other hand is free to mash buttons as fast as possible.
If you're using anything else (console control pad that requires both hands to hold it, PSP, etc.) then your second hand isn't quite as free to mash as fast as possible, so you basically have to use that hand to steady the controller while mashing with your thumb at the same time*. It's no coincidence that console ports of arcade shmups often introduced an auto-fire option - it just makes sense to remove that hassle, should people want to. That doesn't make it cheating.
*There's also the possibility of holding the pad with one hand (the one that's using the d-pad), while propping the controller against your leg, so your second hand is slightly freer to mash away, though by my reckoning this still isn't as comfortable as mashing on an arcade cabinet, particularly for long periods.
In that case, it should be made clear at the start of the month what the rules for auto-fire are going to be, if it should be banned or if there should be two tables. It's partly for reasons like this that I picked RayForce - no worries about autofire with that!**
**Not that I remember, anyway...

OK, had a couple of credits. Made it to Stage 4, but only 1.2 million so far. Looks like I need to investigate some scoring tricks...

In a nutshell, shoot everything and milk bosses to make a lot of those blue "BONUHS" jewels appear and grab them all. They eventually increase in value as long if you don't let any get by. (missing one sets you back 1 step.)

Meant to post this the other night after playing for the first time:
TSTR - 252,840 - Stage 2 - Hellhound - MAME

w00t w00t get jelly y'all
Shmups are scored like golf, right?

Joy. Saw the stage 4 boss for the first time. And had a couple stupid deaths because I didn't Pay Attention to Backward.
ChrisH2049 - 9,784,880 - Stage 4(boss) - Windina - MAME32

DocHauser - 5,540,450 - Stage 5(boss) - Dino 246 - Shmupmame 4.2
Didn't last long against the Stage 5 boss. I think I had the blue bonus items at maximum (81,560 points), so most of my points probably came from there...
This would appear to be the first Rank B grade as well. Not that that means much

Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2014 (January - Blazing Star)
Not sure if this has been mentioned on the thread already - the last couple of times I beat Stage 3, I only got the L,U,C and K letters and missed the Y. I don't think I missed the wave of ships that drop the Y, so do you have to do anything special to get the last letter in Stage 3?
