Adventures of Batman & Robin on Genesis/Mega Drive

Post by Mad_Hatter »

I haven't been in this forum long, but I'm still surprised I have not seen anyone talk about the Adventures of Batman & Robin on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.

I regard this game as one of the best Sega games. It had amazing graphics and my favorite soundtrack in video games ever.

One time at a house party, I told my friend who was the DJ to play this song for fun:

Many people liked it and nobody knew it was a video game song from the 90s.

Anyway, great memories playing this game with my older brother.

It was so hard though. It was Batman. I was a kid... My brother and I couldn't even get passed stage one.

Even today, we can't get passed Stage 3, the Mad Hatter.

It's still a great game, and I'll beat it one day.

I remember playing this one. This is the Batman that's a sort of run-n-gun style game for Genesis. Hard as nails, but always fun. I never beat this one either, so don't feel bad. Games were harder back in the day. The music in this game is by Jesper Kyd, a legendary video game musician. He also made music for Sub-terrania and Red Zone as well on the Genesis. Check out his other video game soundtracks sometime.

I made a post in another thread about another great Batman game for Genesis. I'm about to commit a faux pas by quoting myself.
samsonlonghair wrote:I Recently bought BATMAN for Sega Genesis. This one is based on the 1989 film with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson, not the Animated Series.

I genuinely like the art and the music. It's missing the famous Danny Elfman theme, but the original game music by Naoki Kodaka is excellent.

On the other hand, this game is brutally hard. It took me ten tries just to pass the second level. That said, it's the good kind of hard. Do you know what I mean? It's the kind of hard that leaves you saying, "I know I can beat that guy if I try just one more time. I'm sure I can win if I try again."

We talked about the game a few times in various threads on here. I think it's one of the Genesis system's top 3 run n guns along with Gunstar Heroes and Contra Hard Corps. I just think it's a horrible Batman game though in the sense that it doesn't really do anything to really make use of the license the way it's Super Nintendo counterpart does.

Still, it does some cool graphical tricks with the Genesis hardware and the soundtrack is edgy and cool. I've always said that the soundtrack captures the insanity of Gotham City quite well. The soundtrack is really the most Batman-like part of the game I think

Jesper Kyd really rocked the Genesis sound chip. The stuff from Sub-Terrania especially sticks in my head.

And much like Sub-Terrania this game is hard. It's kind of love it or hate it because of that fact. Technically it's really impressive with sprites flying everywhere and lots of awesome effects that most people wouldn't expect to see on the Genesis.

The only thing that holds it back for me is the awful shmup segments which are really slow and entirely too long. You've also got a huge hit box.

There's a lot to criticize in that it's not really a very good "Batman" game beyond the characters and sense of style, which remains true to the wonderfully gothic look of the cartoon it's based on.

I feel like it's never gained much popularity because it's just not very friendly. I think if the game were a little nicer with its checkpoints and took out the shmup levels we'd hear a lot more praise for it.

You're either going to relish the insane difficulty or give up after the first ten minutes and never play it again. In my opinion it's a real hidden gem and one of the best hardware showcases for the Genesis.

Yea, it really is not that good of a "Batman" game. The music, graphics, and animations are. But the mechanics of the game (specifically having infinite Batarangs with no other weapons other than your kicks and punches) are more of a spaceship shooter than Batman. However, I still think "Batman" when I play this game. It would have been cool if they added another weapon/gadget like the grapple gun.

Has anyone beat this game?

By myself, I am able to get to the Cat Boss on Madhatter's Stage 3.

With my brother, we are able to get to the final boss (Madhatter) in Stage 3.

This game is really not that hard. It is all about keeping your power up. But once you get to the mushroom level on Madhatter's Stage, that is what kills you. You lose everything there. Everything before that is pretty easy, especially with 2 players. If my brother and I were able to keep our power ups, we would have been able to beat Madhatter on that next level pretty easily. We got him to 30 (out of 100 health) with weak power ups.
