Wii-U thoughts so far

You really should play The Wonderful 101 Dave, regardless of reviews, I think you'd probably enjoy the game a lot (especially if you enjoy other Platinum stuff). It takes a bit to grow on you and it can be a bit confusing to control for the first hour or so but once it "clicks" it becomes an incredibly satisfying and fluid brawler.

It is one that I'd likely pick up when I do get a Wii U. Hopefully for under $20

I've got a feeling that it's going to hit $20 before long. I'm planning to nab it then.

It went from $60 to $30 on 12.26. It quickly sold out at toysrus / walmart / amazon and target, and now they are all restocked. Some are still doing it at $30, some back to $60, but what it means to me is that there are now quite a few on the secondhand market and $15 (used) pricepoint should be about right soon.

Really enjoying the Wii U. Have 5 games and they are all solid titles - and don't have any of the Nintendo stuff yet. 3 are exclusive and 2 games are not exclusive (Lego Marvel and Swap Force) but they are entirely different experiences w/the gamepad. In Lego Marvel, you can actually leave your partner and you each have your own screen - it's brilliant.

I never understand what people mean when they say something is "under powered" - seriously, what does this mean? Is it supposed to tow a boat? Or is it geek speak from other console fanboys to say look at our processor, it pisses up the flag pole further. Such silly stuff, at least to me.

I don't know how people can't find Wii U's under $250. I posted one on this site 3 weeks ago, advertised by Nintendo, $250 for the system AND 2 pack in games (physical, not digital: NintendoLand and Swap Force) and 3 skylanders figures. There were at least 3 other similar bundles at $250 at Walmart and Toysrus. Both sites offered free shipping.

The $250 bundle includes the 8GB model, so seeing a price drop like that would make some sense either way. The bundles including the 32GB model are still the same $300 they have been.

Swap force starter bundle sells $50-70, NintendoLand $20-30, both are the complete deal you'd buy separately, fully CIB. Yr getting the console for $180-ish. If you need more than 8GB then yr probably not Nintendo's market tbh - i've got 75 games and have probably played / saved over 100 on my original Wii and still have 60% of the orginal memory remaining.

Not too mention, it's essentially a handheld too, you can play most (all?) games away from your TV on the gamepad itself. My daughter is able to play a Wii U game on the gamepad while were watching Netflix on the Wii, both hooked up to the same TV.

Could depend though. With the Wii, digital downloads were very limited. The Wii U, like the 3DS, has a digital sale model Nintendo is trying to push, and some of the stuff is oddly large. NES Remix states it needs 830MB free for install. Seems like any of the integrated storage could run out quickly, but having four times as much to start with certainly isn't a downside. You do get stands/cradles thrown in with the Deluxe models, though with 'em coming with 2/3 of the models the stand-alone prices are low.

Having bundled games for any of the models does make the choice less one sided than at launch, when only the Deluxe model came with one. Still, long-term, the internal memory is the one thing you're kinda stuck with.

Playing on the Gamepad alone could be a perk. For me, the range is insufficient to play in other areas of the house, and I live by myself, so "not taking up the TV" has fairly limited value. For some people it's undoubtedly a bigger selling point.

What is the advertised range on the gamepad? I guess I haven't researched it, but I was more than surprised to have my daughter in the boys room playing - at least 30' from the TV (and the console, of course).

I hadn't considered the e-shop download stuff, yr right. That is something I don't do at all - I have 0 games downloaded to the wii.

My 360 came w/a 250GB add-on HDD, and i've used 3% of it, of which, i'm pretty sure 2% was lopped off the top as part of the install process and just accepting my profile. I admit to having zero knowledge of the benefits of extra GB regarding digital titles.

I know that my bedroom is just a smidge too far away to be able to comfortably lay down in bed and play Wii U games. I get signal drops and such.

That might have something to do with the walls in the way though.

I sometimes get signal drops at the opposite end of my room. It's a fairly large room, but it's only about 10-12 feet with no major obstructions (a table perhaps).

I also struggle to pick up a reliable internet signal on my Wii U sometimes, and the router is just outside my room. My 3DS, DSi, Wii, PSP and laptop all get full bars of signal. It's really weird.

I'm not sure what the advertised Gamepad range is, I've seen mid/upper 20-foot ranges stated as optimal. When I tried to use it in my bedroom, which is on the other side of the house and up half a level, it came up saying the signal was degraded most of the way down the hall (which was still line of sight).
I don't have issues with WiFi across the same distance (wireless router is parked right next to the Wii U in fact), and I've used PS3 remote play in the same situation as well. So, I was actually surprised it didn't work.


For a while, I was the same with internal storage. Then came PS+. I filled my 32GB Vita card, and put a 1TB HDD in my PS3 Slim. Other consoles, my usage is pretty moderate as well, but the right business model can throw that all off

I think anyone really embracing digital sales on the Wii U would wind up with a USB HDD, as per Nintendo's design, but having a bit more breathing room for smaller digital only titles or DLC could be good. I think most tend to require having excess space so that the installer + installed product can fit too.
