Thankfully today most software is free and apps for specific purpose (Like video editing) are to pay for . Who remembers when web browsers were sold?

I do. It is funny how things evolve. And even before browsers very few people even had computers or anything similar (now I guess many people don't even bother with a dedicated machine with a keyboard, owning just a smart phone or tablet). But it wasn't so long ago for some specific uses e.g. the DS browser was also paid for.

Science and Technology really have been improving quality of life and the exponential advances in computing hardware and software was a huge part of that.
A rising tide lifts all boats. That is even despite the huge economic crisis (that hit particularly harsh in Southern Europe), I wonder how much worse the economic crisis would have been to the overall quality of life - even with the economic situation extremely dire I would say that people still live better than a handful of years ago.

Thank goodness for scientists, in addition to all those nice software devs that make free software!
As some of you probably know, the world wide web as developed in CERN and it was made available "free of charge", so to speak.

Out of topic, but I remember watching an Episode from Seinfield where he says " I got to get on this internet thing" , and this episode was from '97 maybe. Its funny how something we used to live without just fine, became a necessity of life. I still remember not so long ago, 2009, when I was trying to make sure of my friend that his blackberry device can actually go on the internet without wifi and browse sites.

specifics on the Cyberpower. Though this article says the Intel is an i3, which surprised me. The Kotaku says it's an i5 which sounds more right. Still, the specs on this thing aren't that impressive given the price vs. building one and taking into account that there's no Windows license. I feel like Digital Storm might still be a better bang-for-buck of folks going pre-built on a Steam Machine given their past performance.

yeah, none of these impress me. I am not the market, though, as I can and do build my own PCs. There are for folks who don't want to do that but want PC games on their TV, or something.

None of these really have looks or specs that blow me away and the low end prices aren't as cheap as I was expecting.

same here. After building this one, I'd never go back to prebuilds. Too much customization and reward building.

BUT I'm just saying, folks interested in going prebuilt route already seem to have better options. The $699 model that CyberPC announced for instance... seems like Digital Storm has a current $699 build that is better specs, and has Win7 installed. You could plug that into your TV, launch Steam in BigPicture mode and be better off... plus have access to GOG, etc since it's not exclusively SteamOS.

Thing that is pushing the prices so high on these is size I think. Personally I prefer larger computers better airflow for lower temps plus they are easier to upgrade and work on.
