Wii-U thoughts so far

I think if they had a new console in Spring 2015 that was meant to compete with the PS4/Xbox One that many current Wii U owners would buy it since most of them buy anything Nintendo anyway. I think the potential reward would outweigh the potential risk.

I don't know. I think that might look like a pretty desperate move and like Nintendo were clutching at straws. I'm pretty sure gamers, publishers/developers and the media would shun Nintendo for that move. It would stink of something Sega would have done in the 90s in desperation.

The other option is to more or less just let the Wii U stay in third place, support it minimally, drop the price a bit every year, and wait a long time to then launch the next Nintendo console alongside the PS5 and Next Xbox with similar specs to what they will have.

I say they should plan for either a PS4/Xbox One competitor in 2015 or a PS5/Xbox2 competitor in ~2019/2020. Anything else will likely put them in a place where they are seen as too early or too late.

It all depends on if Nintendo is losing money or making money. They supported the Gamecube through the slim times because even though it had a terribly small market share, it was profitable.

Personally, the only thing I need Nintendo to do is crank out more software. I absolutely love what I already have - all I want is more.

I feel like they really need to get it down to that $250 price point. That's the price point that the PS3 currently sits. If you could say, "Here's a brand new Nintendo console that will be supported for the next 5 years, costs as much as the competitors old console and delivers a (marginally) better experience graphically and has this nifty tablet controller" then they'd probably be much better off. On top of that, I feel like it needs a rebrand. Just call it the Nintendo U. Get that stupid Wii moniker out so they can stop confusing the moms and dads.

If they wanted to be really edgy, they could drop the gamepad, get the system down to $200, and call it a day. Frankly, while the tablet is nifty and certainly enhances some games (Deus Ex), it's really unnecessary and I usually end up just playing games with that amazing Pro Controller.

But boy oh boy would they get some shit for that.

The problem with this is the number of games out there now that require the pad. Patching all of them would be a nightmare, and they'd have to deal with any angry customers who bought a new tablet-less Wii U that isn't connected to the internet who can't play some of their games.
