What video card does your laptop have? I first played Portal on a 2007 Macbook in bootcamp, and while there was a definite improvement going to my PC and such, it was still playable on the paltry Intel graphics that has.

Waiting on a sale for the Steam versions would likely net you the best deal. There's a bundle there with both games that has a full price of $25, but can probably be snagged for under $10 if you watch and wait.

The "freebie" that Portal 2 can have is with the PS3 version, which will net you the Steam version as well if you link your PSN and Steam accounts.

I've never played Portal either. I've only had a "gaming PC" for a couple of years now and I mostly just play WRPGs. It does look like a cool game though, I'll have to check it out eventually.

Portal usually goes for sale on Steam pretty often. It's worth a buy though, don't let the overused memes get to you, it's a great game that I think every game will like.

All the talk about Portal reminds me of an XKCD that really applies to me and my game playing/collecting habits -

this.

Portal is a total must-play. Seriously amazing. And I also think the humor in Portal 2 trumps it. Friggin' Wheatly makes me LOL.

I actually never beat the second because i got to the puzzle before the last level and I got stuck due to a glitch (literally stuck) and my save couldn't do anything because it auto saved while I was stuck.

I hate PC gaming and even I loved Portal. Portal 2 was great but it felt less cohesive to me.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
