G.I. Joe Retaliation ... ugh, why did I watch that?!
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I never realized that Captain America (played by Evans) dons a toupee. But after the realization, the toupee is very noticeable.
I also realized that anytime male pattern baldness is mention, the word "suffer" is usually tied to it:
"Do you suffer from male pattern baldness?"
"He suffers from male pattern baldness."
I know every guy usually wants a full head of hair, but suffer is such a strong word. My commercial would likely go something close to "Do you think balding kinda sucks? We can help with that".

I'm afraid that I have Luke's back on this one. I really, really don't like Braveheart. I know a lot of people do like it, and that it received critical acclaim upon its release, but I just have to place it in the category of critically-acclaimed films prfsnl_gmr just doesn't like...(That's OK, though, because we don't all have to like the same things...dsheinem wrote:Luke's out of touch on this one. The film regularly makes "best ever" lists by established and esteemed film review critics/outlets/agencies/institutes. It has its flaws, but it was unparalleled in its day.Jmustang1968 wrote:Further proof that I don't agree much with Luke's tastes. Calling Braveheart terrible is a travesty. Sure, it wasn't very historically accurate and dramatized a bunch of stuff, but as a movie, it was excellent. It is one of the very few movies that has gripped me emotionally and had me completely absorbed.
Personally, I think that men with too much hair on their heads suffer from looking like women...The again, I don't really care what happens to my hairline. I keep my hair cut tight, and I have received some vindication from the fact that male protagonists in most major video game releases now bear at least some resemblance to me:Luke wrote:I know every guy usually wants a full head of hair, but suffer is such a strong word. You guys complaining about Braveheart should watch Bloodrayne. After seeing its "medieval combat" and "gore," you'll think Braveheart is the greatest thing ever.
And it's still better than crap like Troy and Alexander.

Opinions are opinions. Personally, I like Braveheart. It is a fun jaunt through a modified history of Scotland, shot mostly in Ireland and the USA. It has some great fight scenes, but it is not the be all end all film. It has some glaring issues, but like Raiders of the Lost Ark, I can glaze over most of those and just enjoy the film.

That day must have been awful.dsheinem wrote: It has its flaws, but it was unparalleled in its day.
If you like three hours of Mel Gibson porn, go at it. And I could care less about the historical accuracy, I simply don't like the movie. There are only two good things about Braveheart:
1) When the King flips out and throws a dude out of a window.
2) The look on his lover's face after it happens.
Comedy Gold.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but you suggested earlier that the film has aged poorly which is an argument that begs defense. If you didn't like it then and don't like it now, that's fine. If you want to suggest it has aged poorly, you really should support that claim with some more specificity.Luke wrote:That day must have been awful.dsheinem wrote: It has its flaws, but it was unparalleled in its day.
Perhaps it was ahead of its time?

Hell if I'm wasting another three hours of time watching that movie again. In short, it was never great, and got worse over time.dsheinem wrote: You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but you suggested earlier that the film has aged poorly which is an argument that begs defense. Sometimes I think some of you guys don't watch movies with a sober mind. I'm being 100% honest. Lots of times I think "They had to be high to enjoy that".
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I'd not rank it as high as something like Spartacus or some of the other late 1950s-mid 1960s historical epics, but I am hard pressed to think of another well done "historical epic" film from the 20 years or so before Braveheart came out or, really, many in the 20 years since. It's a tough genre to do well, but I think Braveheart manages to get the job done much better than Troy, Gladiator, Alexander, or countless other historical epics that were spawned in its wake. Maybe it's just the genre you don't like?Luke wrote:Hell if I'm wasting another three hours of time watching that movie again. I guess at the end of the day I'll take solace in the fact that your (and prfsnl_gmr's) opinion is in the minority amongst both popular and critical audiences, but I'd still really like to hear a lot more detailed explanation about why you think the film is lousy (and, additionally, what has happened since to reduce its standing further).
EDIT: I just looked up Wikipedia which includes stuff like WWII films in the "historical epic" category. I'm mostly referring to epics situated in the middle ages or earlier...
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I liked Kingdom of Heaven, that'd be a good one for historical epic.
I think many reviewers and people in general don't realize that expectations play a lot into enjoyment of a movie (or any entertainment really.) You don't have to be high to like certain movies, just the right frame of mind.Luke wrote:Sometimes I think some of you guys don't watch movies with a sober mind. I'm being 100% honest. Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.
