Hello all shmup fans of Racketboy, and welcome to 2014's Shmup of the Month thread! As you all know, this thread and its concept was introduced by brunoafh, and he is no longer able to do it, so for the 3rd year of SOTM, I will be bringing it to you.
Blazing Star is up first for January, thanks to foxhound1022!
Default settings should be 3 lives & difficulty level 4.
Please post score as follows:
Name - Score - Stage - Ship - Format
Scores will be updated periodically, at least once a week.
Good luck!

Nyukki - 714820 - Stage 3 - Hellhound - MAME (MVS)
First run. liking this game so far, not too hectic from what I can tell. Did two more runs but couldnt get past the second level boss. Also some pretty major slowdown at times, is the MVS version any better?

Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2014 (January - Blazing Star)
Nice start!
Blazing Star should be very accurate in Mame, so any slowdown you are experiencing there will most likely be in the MVS cart as well. There is the chance that your computer is adding additional slowdown, but I'd be surprised if that were the case, as NG games usually aren't too punishing on your PC.
If it feels like it is slowing down excessively, maybe check out a youtube video and compare.
Is this my San Fransisco twin? I can't stand that guy, he is always in a rush.

This game has been running perfectly on MAME for as long as I can remember, even on the various 0.34 builds I was using a year after the game came out. During my research for this game, I finally found out what those event items do.
Dagnabbit, all that work trying to get the first post perfect and the draft version with your incorrect name made it through. I must have fixed that a handful of times. Now it's fixed. As for the SF Rush series, definitely one of my top arcade racers of all time, as you can see
Don't forget all, look for Blazing Star on the Google Play store for your Android devices, it's 99 cents until the 5th!

for NG games in MAME, do I need something other than just the ROM?

Yeah, you need the bios. I think you want unibios 3.0. You just drop in with your roms. I'm sure Exed will shime in with more details

Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2014 (January - Blazing Star)
I'm playing on the Neo Geo MVS big red cabinet. So far the Hell-Hound ship seems like the best ship. All the other spaceships are bland by comparison. I like how the power-ups increase my spread. I'm having a lot of fun collecting the bonus "LUCKY" letters, though I admit I have died a few times trying to grab a letter I should have just let fly by.
The bosses in this shoot 'em up rock.

Yes. Unibios will be just what you need. What's nice about that is you can also select the territory you want, if you feel like playing the Japanese version of any MVS game. As dunpeal said, just put it in your ROMS folder with the game.

Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2014 (January - Blazing Star)
Didn't know about Unibios in MAME, might give that a go for a laugh. I just got Neogeo.zip and threw it in with the roms. By the way the slow down I was talking about isn't that bad, only really on some of the bosses when things get a bit crazy, I'm guessing it's no worse than on original hardware.
Want to get another run in tonight. When I did make it to level 3 I missed the "L" on level two. In my other runs I collected all the letters but lost my cool on the boss, so when I do finally get back to level 3 I should be able to include the LUCKY bonus.
By the way thanks for organising this and previous SOTM's, guys. Been able to discover loads of great titles I otherwise wouldn't know about.
