Where and What will you be doing this New Years Eve?

Since I have been married, I have generally stayed in on New Years. IMO, it is "amateur night" for drinking, and there are entirely too many drunk drivers on the road (or too many people - like DSH - who are posting to Racketboy while driving, which is somehow both better and worse. )

In any event, my wife and I are ordering really good, bad American Chinese food from Ho Ho Cherry House, cracking some cheap bottles od wine and champagne, and watching The Room. It is going to be awesome.

Now I know why my parents always held a Fawlty Towers marathon and only watched the last few minutes of any Times Square New Years Special. Dear God are those specials terrible.

MTV was airing reruns, and I could have sworn they had their own special. Moving on, our choices were Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin, or Carson Daily with his fellow has beens and Miley Cyrus. So what's in a New Years special? Music? Comedy? New Yorkers talking about their year? A re-cap of 2013 that shows all the iconic moments of the year?

Not even close.

Instead it was two hours of what could have been an E! celebrity update. I learned that in 2013 Alec Baldwin yelled at some people. In 2013 "Beebs" retired and unretired. In 2013 people like the song Blurred Lines. In 2013 Miley Cyrus sang stuff and wore things. My eyes were opened to the fact that Madonna sang about drugs. I learned some Gomez Girl might have lupus. I learned that people on Twitter have nothing better to say than Happy New Year.

But most of all I learned that New Years Specials are a waste of time, as they blow goats. Instead of honoring our troops, instead of remembering Nelson Mandela, instead of reflecting on the Boston Marathon bombing, instead of talking how Obamacare is changing businesses, instead of even looking forward, the crowning achievement of 2013 seemed to be that Kim and Kanye had a baby.

Perhaps I was a fool to expect something worth watching, but I certainly didn't expect a two hour update on celebrities.

Other than that the night was fantastic. Planned on staying in and having friends over, but a few friends stopped by and took us as party hostages. Designated drivers rule.

^ Yup, New Year's TV specials suck and should only be used as background noise if anything...that said, at least post-stroke Dick Clark isn't moping everyone in to the New Year anymore. He was great for decades, but his "comeback" was depressing as hell.

I ended up having an ok time at the party - we basically all laughed at my son's impersonations and then played Scattergories and UNO until midnight. I had two beers and a Sprite

Every Friday for the past year my wife and I each wrote down one thing we were grateful for throughout the week and placed the little pieces of paper into a small wooden treasure chest. For New Years Eve, we sat in front of the fireplace and reviewed everything we had written down and drank Martinelli's cider.

This morning we will watch 200 Cigarettes, like we do every year, because it is the best New Years movie.

"The return" was indeed depressing. With Dick Clark the show was more like a Variety Show. These days...yikes. Terrible stuff.

I was actually a bit upset that we were watching that nonsense and not playing charades, but nothing to stew over. We ate philly cheesesteaks for dinner, but there were snacks a plenty at the party we frequented. One snack baffled me, cocktail wieners wrapped in crescent rolls. You couldn't find nor taste the wiener (ho ho) through that large roll. I say if you wrap a wiener it should include cheese, bacon, and an actual hot dog.

Drinks consumed (I tried them all):

PBR
Punch (Sparkling wine, ginger ale, cranberry juice)
Merlot
Tequila Shots (some crazy expensive stuff my friend bought while on a cruise)
Blue Moon Sampler Pack
Sparkling wine
"Baby New Year" cocktail, which I think was a mix of vodka, strawberry Crush, garnished with an orange slice (tasted like it sounds)
Champagne

...and I also have another party to attend tonight. Without a shadow of a doubt the past three or four weeks have been the craziest weeks of my life. Plus with a little bit of luck, my pup Ripley may see her 14th Birthday in a matter of days. I'm not counting on it as I believe currently she is having her swan song, but I'd love to celebrate with her on her date of birth. She's the best, ever.
