The 2013 NFL Season Thread
Re: The 2013 NFL Season Thread
Re: The 2013 NFL Season Thread
Can't believe the Pats are 11-4. I'm not a diehard fan of any NFL team. In fact, I mainly just like seeing the underdogs win. But with the year the Patriots have had, it's hard for me not to like them this year.
I also really think the playoff format should change. Maybe go down to two divisions per conference. Having 10 to 12 win teams with lower seeds than division winners that may end up 8-8 or 9-7 is just sad. Either the Niners, Cards, or Saints won't make the playoffs, but the Cowboys and Packers still can. :/

Re: The 2013 NFL Season Thread
I've always found it (changing the playoff format) an interesting concept. But it's really hard to put into practice imo...
How does one make a schedule then, if there are only 2 divisions (presumably east and west, 8/8)? Play each in division team once per season? What happens to rivalry series? 1 game a year means the fans of that team may not get to see them play their biggest rival at home that year. How do you handle non-divisional, non-conference games? 8 games vs every opponent in division and 8 games vs ??? I think we'd have really skewed results if you play only your division, but got 2 games vs every team in it per year. Does that mean you only play 4 teams from another division or conference? How is that determined? This would cause a lot of parity issues I'd think. Lots of complaints that Team X got only the 4 weakest non-division opponents, while Team Y got the 4 strongest.
Assuming you are able to iron that out with both the owners and players union....
Is your format- Top 4 records from each division (8 per conference) into a seeded bracket of 8 each (16 teams total)? Then seed them best qualifying record (homefield) vs worst qualifying record and so on, with no byes?
I can get behind that playoff format. Scheduling the regular season stuff however, seems like an complete and utter nightmare.
Besides all that, we know the current divisional format is in place to make the most money and to give fans rivalries, control markets and keep people in seats because teams are eliminated within their division much less quicker when it's 4 divisions of 4, rather than 2 of 8.
I'd love to hear some discussions on it though!

No one is going to use the NHL format of divisions.. I don't mind the current system, though I'd personally would rather have 3 divisions per conference.. I miss the Lions playing Tampa Bay in their division!
Like I said I think a 3 division per conference with 5 to 6 teams would be more appropriate.. 16 playoff teams is probably an extra week of playoffs which I don't mind since I don't think the bye really helps a football team one way or another.. I think the record for bye teams in the playoffs is not really that much in their favor like one would assume..cha cha wrote:Is your format- Top 4 records from each division (8 per conference) into a seeded bracket of 8 each (16 teams total)? Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

Nice gesture. Not as nice as when Brady bought his line a fleet of Audi's, but it is commonplace and almost expected for the QB to buy the offense extravagant gifts.Stark wrote:Dang: Russell Wilson gets his Offensive Line XB1s.

Still, cool.

Well Wilson is one of (if not the) lowest paid starting QB's, I don't think he could afford a fleet of Audi's!Luke wrote:Nice gesture. Yes he could. One game or one commercial could pay for a fleet of Audi's.Stark wrote: Well Wilson is one of (if not the) lowest paid starting QB's, I don't think he could afford a fleet of Audi's!
Again, not trying to downplay his gesture but I probably dropped nearly 4k in Christmas gifts for family and close friends this year and I consider myself to be your average middle class dude.
I will admit I do go a bit overboard though.

Eagles fan? I'm excited for sunday night football but pretty much know the cowboys will get boat raced. I don't have any confidence in their d. Eagles are playing good football right now to.dsheinem wrote:so psyched for the games today
