I do have a retro PC for DOS and Win98 games, but Unreal works great on a modern PC. Dirt cheap and no barriers to entry if you want to jump in. Looks pretty in HD too.

That's good to know. I built my Voodoo 2 box for a few games which have trouble running on modern PCs, but Unreal wasn't necessarily one of them. Actually, the act of building my box is what brought Unreal back to my attention - I was going through a closet at my parents place, looking for old PC games I bought way back in the day, when I came across the box for Unreal with the CD still inside. It was a title that had completely slipped between the cracks for me, a title I had bought, couldn't run, and then entirely forgot about for a decade and a half. I figured, since I have this new old-PC ready to play such games, why not give it a second chance? Turns out it runs like a champ on my box.

Kind of a happy accident. The box for unreal is still a sight to behold, with the CD case held in the middle of the window like a floating icon.

I didn't enjoy Unreal much at the time. It had been hyped to the extreme. It was supposed to be a showcase for MMX processors. It was also one of the first games to have EAX sound.

So it just didn't live up to the hype for you, or did you think it wasn't fun at all?

It's kinda funny, because I went into the game with 0 expectations and was blown away.

By the time the game was released, we were already playing Quake and both of its expansions. We were playing quakeworld three wave CTF and other mods. Unreal just felt too rough in comparison.

This. See, lol. I'm sure many think the same as I did myself for ages.

To get this and Deus Ex (same engine) running well on modern PC's, check out this page:

Deus Ex is still a bit tricky though. The lighting in that one is a little harder to adjust too I think (Unreal has brighter environments and day time levels) and for whatever reason I couldn't get things looking too good on my new PC earlier this year. But Unreal was pretty easy to get running with this renderer without tweaking much.

I played Unreal a few years ago (2007?) and loved it. It left such an impression on me that I can probably go without playing it for the rest of my life and still remember a decent amount of it. While the gameplay was fun, its atmosphere is the real highlight of the title. I felt like I had to get off the planet Na-Pali no matter how many aliens come at me. Like Half-Life, the game does a good job at making you feel alone. The background characters, corpses, and non-combatant NPCs all felt significant despite not doing anything exceptional since they were the only life you encounter. I could go on and on about this game. Good shit, good shit.

Huh, I've been meaning to play Deus Ex again and this just might make me do it.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. I think Unreal Tournament and Unreal Engine have completely eclipsed the popularity of Unreal as a whole. I wouldn't doubt many people familiar with either of those two products have no idea a product simply called Unreal exists.

I blame Epic for naming confusion lol

I knew Unreal Tournament wasn't the first game back then, but I assumed Unreal had the same focus.
