-Brave Fencer Musashi - Great action-adventure game with RPG-elements. It's basically The Legend of Zelda meets Final Fantasy, but with a lot more humor.
-Chrono Trigger - What is there to say about this game that hasn't already been said by a thousand RPG fans? The time-travel story and the way your actions ripple through time is just amazing.
-Einhander - I seriously feel that this is one of the most unique, and one of the best shoot-em ups ever made. Fantastic use of 3D graphics while keeping it 2D gameplay, and an amazing soundtrack to accompany it. And the weapon-stealing mechanic is just so cool. I love the futuristic (yet not space again) setting, too.
-Parasite Eve - Back in the day, the cutscenes were jaw-dropping (not so much anymore). It also has a great horror story in a modern setting with modern weapons, and with some really cool atmosphere. But beyond that, there is some unique gameplay. It mixes the traditional random-encounter JRPG gameplay, but then gives you real-time gameplay when you go into battle.

Those are the two reasons I still remember the game to this day. Gameplaywise, it just felt like another shooter to me, but I like the atmosphere it created through its use of audio and visualsBurningDoom wrote:

Come to think of it, I probably would have never played it were I not so fascinated by the idea of Square releasing a shooter

Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring is definitely unique and used to be the only way to get Final Fantasy 7 characters into a fighting game.

I must be in the minority about Einhander, haha. I remember playing it right when I got Thunder Force V too which I thought was a lot better (similar style too graphically).

Didn't list it because it was developed by HAL.... but yeah, great action-RPG.Ack wrote: And what about Alcahest?

The crazy thing about Alcahest is that I've yet to see anyone remark about how peculiar his first form is.

Why is no one reading my initial post?pierrot wrote:Personal favorites include:
Dewprism (Threads of Fate) - Rue's scenario is really impressive to me. (Not so much Mint's.) The combat is pretty cool, and it can be played for hours beyond the standard Mint/Rue scenarios.
With all the mentions of Parasite Eve, I feel inclined to say that the game play and atmosphere are relatively good for a survival horror/rpg hybrid experience, but the story comes off as pretentious drivel: 'Look at me! Pseudo-medical innuendo! Explosions! Family Matters! I'm super cereal, guys!'
I had fun playing the game, but the story made me want to punch shit.

What about Unlimited Saga? Anyone have experience with that? I always thought it looked interesting.

Re: Best Squaresoft games that aren't Final Fantasy
I bought it not too long after it was released, and couldn't stomach it for more than ten hours or so. I always felt like there was a good game there, but with the roulette wheel fighting, and overall bizarre presentation, I got rid of the game when I started college, and don't look back on the game fondly at all.Stark wrote:What about Unlimited Saga?
