Probably because of the "SG" part.

Anyhoo, the best way to play them on an American SMS is to use a Master Everdrive. There's no adapter for playing Japanese carts on an American/European system, but there are a few floating around that do the opposite.

However, I would really recommend playing them on a real SG-1000 (or SG-1000 II) because the color palette the SMS uses for those games is somewhat messed up and actually makes some games harder than they already are (!). If you're patient you can actually get one for relatively cheap; I got my SG-1000 II for just $75 on Rakuten for example.

yeah the SG-1000 II can on occasion be had at a "reasonable" price.
OTOH, trying to source the original SG-1000 system is next to impossible if you don't want to pay out the ass for it.

The SG-1000 II is a better system too, since both controllers are removable and some SG-1000 IIs can even be modded for RGB.

Since we're on the topic of old SG-1000 Master System precursors, I'd like to ask this:

Is the Mark III internally identical to the Master System?

It's actually fairly different than the SMS. For one thing, the PCB is single-sided so all the solder points and traces are on the bottom. It also has a different expansion port (the same as the SG-1000), no BIOS, discrete logic chips for handling I/O instead of a single custom chip, and no Light Phaser compatibility.

My copy of Masters Of Combat just arrived in the mail.

I get a weird kind of enjoyment from playing fighting games on 2-button systems, seeing developers awkward attempts to recreate SF2's gameplay on hugely inferior hardware.

In this case one button attacks, the other lets your do dashes and jumps depending on what direct you're pressing on the d-pad. And there's no quarter-circles here, all special moves by doing different sequences of diagonals on the d-pad. Down-back then up-forward to throw your standard projectile. :?

It's not unplayable, but it's certainly... different. Still a million times better than TecToy's SMS port of SF2.

I can't bring myself to acknowledge that port as a Street Fighter game. I once wanted it for my collection... then learned that there is no "Shoryuken" move in the game (a Street Fighter without Ryu/Ken's iconic uppercut is just plain blasphemy). And most special moves that ARE in the game, are near impossible to do reliably, at least judging by me attempts at emulating the game.

It's too bad too, I'm confident that a decent port could have been made for the Game Gear (actually I'm still kinda' disappointed that it never happened).

Master System + Master System II and the games include a complete R-Type and loose Phantasy Star. Price will probably get pretty crazy but it's at $5 right now(with $20 shipping :P).

Edit:
lol that didn't take long it's up to $100 shipped now :P. With 6+ days left.

^yeah, i remember watching that one spike up and going NOPE, haha

i was the weird kid on the block with a master system (the playground arguments of ghost house vs castlevania were decisively not in my favor), but i loved it so. looking to get one back down the road, hopefully boxed & ready to be FM modded!

sucks that some carts shot up in price too, i thought Alex Kidd in Miracle World was common for the system, but now CIB it's like the price of Master of Darkness.
