I ordered this on ebay for35.00. Cool thing is that it only cost me 12.00 thru my bank account because I had forgotten that I had money in my paypal account. I had link to the past before but I never played it. I love the first Zelda. Am I going to miss out on a lot of stuff if I just play this game and not link to the past or do I need to play link to the past first?

I have a feeling I'm not going to enjoy this one. I have never in my life been stuck so early in a Zelda game. I haven't even made it to the game's first dungeon and already I feel like I've hit a brick wall.

I'm supposed to go warn this Seventh sage, apprentice guy about the villain coming after him. There's a big X on my map showing me where he is, but every god damn path I take to get there is blocked off in some way.

I've literally been wondering around the map for an hour with no goddamn clue what the hell I'm supposed to do to progress the story and if my post hasn't made it clear already I'm getting kind of pissed off
When you are near the area marked with an X, did you notice any "ball switches" you couldn't reach? Did you notice the markings on top of some pillars nearby?

I'm finishing up some other games first but I'll get to this soon. I'm a little excited about the reports of tough puzzles. A lot of recent Zelda games have been too much of a cakewalk for me.

The handheld Zelda's have always been my favorites for some reason, Link's Awakening and Minish Cap especially. I initially thought revisiting A Link to the Past's world was a bit cheesy but I admit I'm looking forward to it.

wait, you put the game on/high on your "best of" list without even playing a dungeon?
No, I just said that I was in the process of playing it and that it could end up on that list. That was me responding to you putting it on the list

Anyway, I actually did figure out what to do since that last ranty post of mine, and it was basically what MrPopo said. When I first read those signs, I had no idea who this Zovio person was, and the sign said he had a place south of the castle. So I kept looking around for a house south of the castle. I didn't know it was the dude living in my own house. I think it was silly of the designers to think we would remember some random dude we met for like a minute at the beginning of the game when reading those signs, and I never would have thought that returning to my house would be something needed to progress the story. I thought I'd never have to go back there again, how wrong I was.

Anyway, I've since finished up the first three dungeons and acquired the master sword. I give the game a thumbs up. It's pretty much like playing Link of the Past all over again, with the main difference being the wall merging mechanic (which is pretty cool), and the ability to acquire all weapons early in the game, which does make the game feel slightly less linear

If I want to get nitpicky though, I could say that the new versions of the Link to the Past songs don't always sound as good as the originals, and the game doesn't have an epic opening the way Link to the Past did with you waking up after a telepathic message from Zelda, only to find your father geared up for battle and telling you to stay behind, then heading to the castle on a rain soaked, stormy night, fighting your way past enemies to find him and rescue the princess. By comparison Link Between Worlds starts off in rather bland fashion. It's little things like that that separate great games from classic games.

Still, I'm very much enjoying Link Between Worlds. It's old school Zelda and it's well done. It would have been nice to see them shake up the old formula a little bit more, but the wall merging stuff is really fun, and the 3D works better here than in a lot of other 3DS games. Also, being able to warp between save points at any time is AWESOME. It's basically Zelda's version of fast travelling and saves A LOT of time.

Whoops! That's what happens when you read through the last few posts of a thread too quickly

Can you play this with the D-Pad? Checked it out at a friends last night but phew, I forgot how awkward that joystick feels.

Well when you think about it, that's what most "top down" sprite work is actually recreating anyway.

Even knowing that's what they're doing, the illusion still works really well. Either way, it's an interesting perspective.

It's strange that they didn't simply lower the camera angle.
