My advice is to heavily use the GTS. If you catch your version exclusives you can easily get the other version exclusives using the Deposit feature. Searching for a Pokémon tends to only leave up the absurd trades (want legendary for my crappy Pokémon).

The Global Trade System, introduced with Pokémon Diamond & Pearl and vastly improved with this generation. On your bottom screen hit the folder icon, then the right arrow to see the GTS icon. You'll be prompted to connect to the internet and save, then once you do you can begin trading. It's a pretty simple system. One person Deposits a Pokémon and specifies what they want in return (Pokémon type and optionally level range and gender). Someone else uses Search to see who are offering up a particular Pokémon (with optional level range and gender). In previous generations it would only show up to 5 offers at once, so you tended to have to jump through hoops to find the non ridiculous offers. With this generation you get a full list (and they even let you quickly drill down to just Pokémon you have and can leave out legendaries).

hmm unfortunately in order to connect to the trading system I need up update my 3DS but when I go to update it just gives me an error updating message and restarts my 3DS. I this due to the Nintendo Eshop being down or did I do something wrong?

Edit: yep seems like Nintendo servers are down, must be from all the Wii Us and 3DS's people got for christmas trying to all update at once. Dammit haha should of done this before Christmas.
