@AppleQueso Don't want to speak for GirlGamer55 but I would think that's sarcasm.

We've had enough members come here to say that sort of stuff seriously that I just took it at face value.

If it's sarcasm, just consider it a response to that original comment.

Same thing applies to the judge comment towards cha cha's incident. It really bothers me that belittling the gaming community is justified in the mainstream.

He's a fellow AtariAge member gooddealgames. And, he doesn't even have the biggest collection, either. http://atariage.com/forums/topic/220028 ... ollection/

^Not saying it's not impressive, it's massive!, but let's not let "world record" mean more than it actually does.

I should have said, I don't think he's registered on any forums discussing any games beyond the NES era. He is a member of twin galaxies and a ton of golden age retro forums and homebrew communities.

Also several things should be taken into consideration before belittling the record:

1) He did not ever try to attain the world's largest collection. He just ended up having a lot, and knew he had more than the previous record holder. Thought it'd be easy to go through the process and was wrong, there is a reason a lot of people don't go for these records... the sheer cost alone is staggering.

2) The world record is for unique titles, no duplicates are allowed (unless the region or other systems release can be proven to have significant difference in content). Homebrew,Emulation, PC games, Roms and/or digital copies don't count either. You wouldn't believe how badly that hurts a lot of collectors numbers, and how often they sell off a lot of it.

3) The guy is way more into collecting consoles. He has more consoles than I have ever seen, and way more than I have ever heard of. That is probably the most impressive thing about his stuff, aside from my personal fave of the complete Jag/Jag CD collection.

4) The internet is full of talkers and former vendors. They can snap a few pics at the height of their inventory and/or collections at any time. The pics live on forever, the supply does not, and most of the "more massive" collections have a metric fuckton of duplicated games.

I am, and always will be a fan of just collecting what you like. Stuff that represents you as a player. Which is what my collection shows (whenever I eventually show it). Having a giant sheer volume of games is not impressive to me, a lot of these guys just simply have more money and better access to the second hand/buy out industry... and buying out huge store closing inventories and giant auction lots is not impressive at all.
I respect Mike most of all, because he is the exact same way. He doesn't have a ton of NES stuff, because he wasn't into that system. He has less oXbox games from me, because he never sought to collect for it, he just got stuff he liked or ... at least like the prospect of being able to play when he finds time, he just gets stuff that goes with his favorite consoles/obscure consoles or games he immensely enjoys.

So I give that man respect where respect is due.

...anyhoo. I've always wondered what kind of homeowner's insurance these kind of fellas have and what the price tag of covering it annually looks like. I'd be scared to death of fires, natural disasters, and burglars with all the people who know who you are.
I asked my agent about this, and he did not try to sell me any additional coverage. He told me to take lots of pictures.. so I've got a spreadsheet and pictures saved on a cloud; If anything ever did happen, it would fall under personal property coverage.

NOW, that being said: a) my collection is worth about 1/100th of this guy's and b) I fully expect to have to fight the insurance company if I ever did file a claim.

If you're a serious collector like the guy in the article, I imagine he probably has a "replacement cost" plan as opposed to "actual cash value". "actual cash value" means that the insurance company is going to take depreciation into account, claim that your 30 year old video games are worth a dollar, and offer their condolences.

There is separate collectibles insurance. I think I got a quote of 30k insurance for $120 a year or so from Geico

I don't think this is true.

Michael's youtube video (LINK) has this in the description:
Richard Lecce had previously held the record since September of 2010. Guinness listed his collection consisting of over 8,000 game titles. A funny story - I purchase games in bulk from several dealers. I made the mistake of telling one dealer in particular that I was going for the record. As it turns out, that dealer also sold games to Richard and gave him a heads up that I was "gunning for the record." As a result, I stopped buying from that seller and quietly built up my collection to be several thousand games over the existing record just to assure that I cleared it.

I went with Amica and I believe it's 25k insurance for a crisp Grant per year. Not sure if you have to itemize with Geico, but with Amica all they require are photos (with a date listed of course). It ended up being cheaper than what we paid for renter's insurance when my wife and I lived in an apartment.

As far as if this guy deserves the World record...Who cares? I read the Guinness Book of World Records to see pictures of fat identical twins riding motorcycles and to learn exactly how one can have a two hundred pound scrotum.

Hah, that is interesting he said that. Completely different from what he has told me in the past, but eh, I'm not gonna claim to be the guy's keeper here. Make of it what you want I guess, I wonder how much of what will be written/said will be sensationalized for to make interviews and articles more 'controversial'. 'readable', 'conversation-worthy' etc...
