Playing Old MacOS games on a Modern Mac

Post by racketboy »

So since I just started a DOS/Windows Hidden Gems thread, I thought maybe we should do the same with the Mac.
While I have used Macs in my old graphic design classes, I have never used a OSX-based Mac other than playing with them in store displays.

So my question is, is there a way to play old Mac games in OSX like there is in Windows (DOSBox, etc?)
That would make it more practical to recommend old Mac games so people could play them on their new machines.

Thoughts?

There always seems to be a thread on this site that intrests me directly, weird...

Just got into old Macs big time recently. So far have collected a G3 Wallstreet, a B/W PowerMac G3 and the original 1989 Macintosh Portable! Got OSX Tiger running on the two G3 Macs so I have a bit of experience with it. OSX has a mode called "classic mode" where OSX boots a virtual version of OS9 in the background. This is compatible with many of the games released between 1995-2000. Before that, the graphics settings are a bit too low for modern displays, and errors start popping up. Classic mode has been removed on Intel Leopard so only pre-Intel Macs have the ability to run older software.

Finding games for MacOS is a little tricky nowadays, however http://mac.the-underdogs.info/ has a pretty good selection of abandonware games.

Hope any of this helps! I could do a bit more reaserch into it if you need. I'm only learning about Macs at the moment... Been a PC man all my life, so its a bit of a shock. (WHAT! Only one button? Your kidding me! etc...)

Oh, and the game Escape Velocity is a requirement for the article.

What about running DOS/PC games on a MAC? I've find a few things that work, but I think paralells or boot camp is the only option.

Dosbox works well on Intel Macs.

And it isn't MAC, MAC is a makeup brand and it also means Media Access Control as part of a MAC Address.
