Games Beaten 2013
Re: Games Beaten 2013
Yeah to me it doesn't matter, because I use this thread as an opportunity to talk about/review a game that I've played sufficiently (aka "beaten".) This in turn gets me a reliable list of people with whom I trust their reviews and can find other games that I would like to play.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.
Re: Games Beaten 2013
Yeah it's not really like it's a competition or anything. Its just a thread to share what games you have "beaten" recently and to share you ideas about it.Stark wrote:Yeah to me it doesn't matter, because I use this thread as an opportunity to talk about/review a game that I've played sufficiently (aka "beaten".) Why the gals were yapping it up last night my friend Bruce and I straight ran through this game (and an eighteen pack of PBR). The first hour and a half were pretty fun, but then it turned into boring button mashing but at the two and a half hour mark we both were saying "Well, we made it this far..."
Pilgrim is a fun game with a lot of obvious homages to other video games and the graphics are very neo-geoey. Great game to play with a buddy, but it gets a bit laborious.
And although I had a great time playing it (mostly due to the fact I was playing with a friend) I kept thinking "I wish we could be playing River City Ransom".

Time to squeeze a few more in before the end of the year. Was hoping to hit 50, but I doubt I'll have time.
Rogue Legacy: Had no idea what this game was, but a friend swore I would like it, and it was on sale. Damn, he was right! Its been a long time since I've had that "I just need to get one more try in" feeling. I think I blew through the game in 2 sittings. The game is a bit short, especially once you know what you are doing, but it feels satisfying in the end. I think I had a family line of 101 characters
This game has sparked my interest in checking out some actual roguelike games, as random dungeons and permadeath are elements I've enjoyed much more than I thought I would. Also, Gigantism is the greatest thing ever, and I can't play a video game upside down... at all!
Diablo III: My girlfriend and I played the crap out of Gantlet: DL, PSO, and Norrath... and this is basically our new fix. We went with the 360 port. The game's story is alright, the bosses weren't great... but hacking stuff up and farming for loot is just a blast. We will be starting up Nightmare mode soon here. This is definitely a game best experienced with another player. I'm not sure I'd have reached the end of Normal alone, but with the lady, we will probably at least reach Hell mode before giving it a long rest.
Ys Book I: My 2nd time through this on the Turbo. Mostly played it to gain access to Book II, which I have never played, but you can't go wrong with an Ys Book I playthrough. The game is short, but it isn't ashamed of it, and never tries to artificially extend the game (Well, up until the very end that is). The pacing is great, grinding is a blast, the bosses are very fun, and DAT SOUNDTRACK!

2 more games beaten. Not my best year, but at least I'm past the 52 cut-off - 1 game a week isn't so bad.
Streetpass Mansion is the last of the Streetpass games that came out for 3DS earlier this year, and is one of the more involved, one of the longest and one of the best. It plays a little like the two basic games in the plaza - puzzle swap and Steetpass Quest (Find Mii in the US) - people you've passed give you puzzle pieces, and you walk through a mansion fighting enemies. The puzzle pieces you find are shaped like tetris blocks, and placed on the floor to build rooms and corridors to explore. Building a room by making a square of matching coloured pieces gives you bonuses like treasure chests, whilst corridors let you explore further but often contain enemies. Theres a levelling system, lots of weapons which can be combined to upgrade them, a decent variety of enemy types and a few neat asides such as block puzzles to take part in. It's between this one and Streetpass Squad for the best of the Streetpass games for me, and they couldnt be more different - one a fast paced shmup and the other a slow RPG styled game, but both are really enjoyable.
Botanicula is an interested little indie game on PC. The art style for the game is gorgeous, and the music, whilst understated and rare -is also lovely and adds a lot to the games mystical atmosphere. Playing as a crack team of tiny plants, you have to get to the bottom of the tree to plant a magic seed you've found whilst avoiding deadly space spiders. The game plays as a point and click, and most of the puzzles are pretty logical, if a bit easy. Sometimes trial and error is required, but it's not often frustrating, although a couple of them will have you getting really mad. The game is controlled entirely with the mouse, including movement which is limited to clicking an arrow to move to the next screen. As pointless as it would be, I'd have liked some more direct movement control as it kinda feels a little 'flash game'-ish this way. The game made me laugh a few times, and the weird creatures you'll encounter will keep you playing through. Your little team of heroes are utterly charming, and some puzzles let you choose one of the 5 to attempt to complete a task, often with humourous results. The ending kind of happens really suddenly though, and the game is honestly a bit too easy for it's own good, with most of the 'tricky' bits being fetch quests which just require scouring every screen. Overall, it's a fun little game worth a try, but it doesn't hold up to my other PC indie game beaten this year - To The Moon.
