I know, you'd think those sites that don't already have your address would just read your mind to figure out what speed shipping you want and look up your IP address to figure out that cost and tax. That wouldn't be creepy and invasive at all!

What, you feel like you're entitled to have a non-entitled culture?

I'm pretty sure that most people do that automatically. However, I only really consider that when shopping on stores like Ebay (where shipping usually isn't free), Amazon when I'm not buying on Prime, etc. I will check multiple places and add shipping into the price. However, most places have a line that says "plus shipping" or it will blatantly tell you what the shipping price is or if its free. They don't wait until your ready to check out before they hit you with shipping.
the King wrote:Is this for real?
Absolutely.
the King wrote: You know the companies that do free shipping just factor that cost into the price of the product, right?
Yep, i know that. Which is fine because when I see the price, I know what I will pay. I don't expect to pay $10, then get to the end and see the final price of $17.

So if the game was priced at $16.74 with free shipping you would of bought it?

No. As I said in my original post, I think the amount of shipping vs the price of the game is ridiculous. If it were a couple of bucks, then I would have paid it.

So, if the price was $11.99 with free shipping, then absolutely.

I was actually pretty annoyed when I had to start paying taxes for online orders.

I'm not really sure that your reply had anything to do with taxes, which is what Luke's quote was about. But, I get what your saying. However, most sites charge a flat rate for shipping for an item. Regardless of where you live.

Actually it has nothing to do with entitlement. I consider myself to be a pretty successful guy, especially for my area. The accomplishments I have achieved in my life have been solely due to my own hard work. I have never asked for anything to be handed to me. Nor would I. On that same point. The entitlement culture is solely perpetrated by the generation that came before us. My generation (I'm 32) has been told since birth that we won't have to work hard breaking our backs in a factory if we get a quality education or that we need to get an education so that we aren't wearing a paper hat, flipping burgers. Our teachers, parents, and leaders have done nothing but fill our heads with the idea that all it takes to be successful in life is an education. So, we go to school, en debt ourselves to Sallie Mae or Uncle Sam to earn a degree that has been sold to us as a golden ticket to the American Dream. Only to find that there are millions of other people out there with that same degree and expectation. All competing for the same handful of jobs.

Now, you have a whole generation of people that can't find a job good enough to pay the debt they have incurred on the path that was forced down their throats for the past 20 something years. These people have become bitter and disenfranchised. There are people all over the country with bachelor degrees waiting tables, running cash registers, and asking if you "want fries with that". They don't earn enough money to both pay for the debt they have accumulated and to also save in order to move to a better area to try to obtain a job in their field, so they just drudge along. Waiting for a job they have rightfully earned to come along. They want to know where the hell their golden ticket is. They all want what was promised to them.

This hasn't been the case with me. I have honestly been lucky. I worked my ass off, put myself through college with loans, scholarships, grants and a full-time job. I didn't get a job in my field at first, but eventually did. Like I said, I've been pretty lucky. My parents instilled in me a strong work ethic. I saw the struggles they had raising my sister and myself and vowed to never have to work two and three jobs to make ends meet. I sought the skills and education that employers want. During college I worked my way into management. I was a store manager for Sprint for three years. After college I landed a job working for a company that inspected trains loaded with coal and also the preparation plants that prepared the coal for use. I did various office work for them. But got to tag along on a lot of the field work. They later expanded their business to add a lab to test the coal for various properties. I transferred into the lab, training to eventually manage it. I also worked various retail jobs like Gamestop and FYE. I took something valuable away from each job to ensure I had real world and educational experience to offer a future employer. I now have a great job working in IT. When my boss called to offer me the job, she said her decision was based on my knowledge of networking and based on the skill set I have learned through all of my past experiences. So my hard work paid off. However, not everyone is as fortunate or as focused as I was. But, it wouldn't matter if everyone was just like me. Because at the end of the day, there are only so many jobs to go around. But, I digress.

In this case, it is purely conditioning. I can't tell you the last time I paid for shipping that was more than a couple of dollars. Nearly every website offers free shipping of some sort. Whether its absolutely free or free with a purchase over X amount. Also, damn near every major retail site lets you know the shipping situation upfront.

I don't think you could deny that if you went to a restaurant and they charged you for refills of Pepsi, you would be taken aback. Because as a culture, we have been conditioned to expect trends in certain aspects of life to always be there. I can't think of a single restaurant that charges for refills of fountain drinks.

To be honest, in hindsite, I should have targeted my annoyance at the fact that the shipping wasn't made clear when selecting the item I wanted to buy. That is the real thing I'm actually irritated about. Paying for shipping is generally fine as long as its a reasonable amount (however, in this case it wasn't). I guess I like it to be made clear from the outset. This is something that nearly every retail site does. This will completely dictate whether or not I will buy an item. If I don't see it, I assume it's free (because in those cases it usually is). This helps me to decide on the item I will buy. Let's say I'm shopping for one of those motherboards like in my newegg picture and one item is $20 cheaper, but they charge $8 dollars in shipping, but the more expensive (actually better) item has free shipping, I will buy the better item. Because the true cost gap is only $12.

Meh, to each their own. I've grown accustomed and probably a little spoiled to getting free or nearly free shipping everywhere. And also to have it disclosed at the selection point. When it's not, it irritates me. We all have our opinions. People can think I feel entitled or spoiled or whatever. It doesn't bother me. I'm actually pretty surprised people feel this strongly about shipping

I usually ask whether refills are free or not, even if the answer is usually "yes". Why? Because I don't think I am entitled to free refills, even if lots of places offer it.
