This is all getting a little too "meta" for me.
I'm not going to dare infer anything from anyone else's post. For what it's worth, I was being literal, not sarcastic. I really do encourage everyone to go to a live show and buy a cd from the musician who's playing.

Re: CGR is leaving Youtube
Johnny Come Lately here, but I was disappointed to see early in the thread some people downplaying the work involved in these vids. This isn't some one and done, fun little video editing class project these guys do. It's an editing and sometimes creative grind and no, there aren't any actual deadlines but no one's going to watch a channel that can't crank out videos at a good clip to keep people interested.
I don't have a YT channel but I have pretty much all the equipment necessary because I'd like to make the time for it. The thing is I can't even begin to learn how to use editing software (I am tech savvy but not beyond most people) because I simply don't have the time.
But let's say I learned. Now I have the initial financial investment and basic knowledge to POTENTIALLY make good videos that people may watch. Now I pick a game and play it from start to finish. I have to then film myself talking about it to make the video interesting. After that I write a script for a voiceover, then record said voice over. Then I sit down and edit it all together in Adobe or whatever. I could just edit for 2-4 hours and have a competent video, but I'd like to make it great. Throw in effects, maybe a short little comedy bit if I can convince a friend, then add those things in. Music would be nice too. Don't forget I have to do all of this without stepping on any toes legally.
That's just one video and I think any YouTuber would like to crank one out every 2 weeks at least. That's just your standard vid too. Imagine someone like Spoony, whose fans clamour for half hour long segments detailing everything he hates about the newer Final Fantasy games. Every time he makes one of those videos he has to go through probably 10-15 hours of game footage, write a script that makes sense, and do everything else above.
I also worry about people whose content is retro only. Hidden gems videos and whatnot are great but how many channels can do them before we start hearing the same stuff over and over? I think it's already happening.
TL;DR version: Conceptualizing, shooting, writing, and especially editing these videos in a timely manner is WAY harder than some make it out to be. Oh I forgot: You also have to be good at it for it to be at all worth your time. Try it with a full time job and other obligations too. That's the boat most people are in.

Re: CGR is leaving Youtube
Do we really wanna start preaching about how much work some people do over others?
All an individual can do, is judge what they have seen and done before. This is the way I approach this and many other situations. The vast majority of VG review/commentary vids I have seen on YT have sucked. Period.
If the person truly has a passion and talent for media and creating content for viewers to consume, then they can take their show elsewhere and use that talent to rebuild an audience on their own.
People lose their jobs all the damn time, and I don't care if some of these YT reviewers/players lost their jobs or source of income. They aren't gonna go on a crusade for me if I lose my job to some shitty new policy at my workspace.
Are you gonna cry for the janitor down the street who lost his job at some building due to cutbacks and/or new regulations that no longer required his or her services?
Example meaning: We can draw analogies all day. I personally don't care how hard some of these guys work, if they suck- sorry too bad, time to move on. If they are good, then they can pick up where they left off elsewhere, sending YT a message that what they did will cost them in the long run.
I'm also not siding with YT's policy either. The point is not caring and expecting people to deal with it, adapt and move on when they are dealt a crappy hand in life.

^ Not only are people losing jobs over it. But we, personally, are losing a big part of our hobby, and that sucks.

Re: CGR is leaving Youtube
^I don't think we are. When this story broke, I asked many of my local videogaming friends and online playing buddies how heavily YT gaming vids influenced their gaming habits, fandom and product purchasing? And none of them cited any YT content that is now gone because of this policy as being a source of inspiration or recommendation for them.
Now do I believe that my findings are the be all, end all of this convo? Hell no. But it's enough of a sample size to realize the impact isn't that big, and a lot of crappy videos that annoying people link everywhere can now start disappearing.
Any VG vids I watched on YT are all still there (and I struggle to think I'd care if they were gone either, I'd just find other sites that host similar content). So to me, this is not a huge deal and is just fanboys doing a lot of white knighting for their favorite personalities that were affected and crusading against "the man" for a "cause".

Obviously from the amount of viewers and subscriptions the videos get and from the response on here, it is an issue. Whether or not you or your circle of friends personally care or not is irrelevant in the broader scope.cha cha wrote:^I don't think we are. Re: CGR is leaving Youtube
I can certainly agree to my opinion being irrelevant, it is opinion after all.
But citing video view counts and subscriptions, which mean absolutely nothing (to anyone but the content providers as a pedestal to promote and make money off of) and can be affected MANY other factors besides 'true fandom', is also irrelevant.
I mean, there are paid services out there to have a guy give you xX unique page views/subs. And you best believe a lot of youtube hosts/personalities pay for such services to bolster their numbers and earn more money.
Let's not get into semantics here guys, all anyone is doing is circling back to "well I know this one guy is honest, and works really hard". when the rest of us are talking about the bigger picture you claim to be also defending.
Everyone situation with broad sweeping changes with online media ends up hurting some honest people. Doesn't mean the changes weren't right or weren't needed. If these guys you want back are so legit, then let them go to another site and take their fans with 'em. YT isn't the only way to make a buck, it's just the easiest.

Re: CGR is leaving Youtube
Sure some views and subs are extraneous, but it still doesnt mean there arent fans who genuinely enjoy the content.
This is still a case of stop liking what I dont like or I dont like it anyway so I dont care. Of course you dont care as you saw little personal value. I dont even care that much, but I can see for many that it will have an impact.

Re: CGR is leaving Youtube
I can see for many, it is an exaggerated impact and it's also a widely known symptom of internet mob mentality to join in on internet crusades because people you like/follow are doing so (or a good chance to cause drama and be a part of drama), which is what I am observing in other places discussing this. Whole lot of standing on a soap box, telling people what they think is right and what actually is happening is wrong.
I actually think this thread is one of the most mild-mannered conversations about this YT change I have personally observed. I'm super okay with you not agreeing on my thoughts, I just felt like expressing them regardless.
