I didn't claim it was a recent phenomenon.

I was just noting how far back it went...

Fair enough. I didn't mean any offense.

I just found out that the Pac-Man Christmas special is apparently going to be on Boomerang this Saturday at midnight.
I'm way more excited by this than I probably should be.

I think videogames are getting to a state where you just can't know it all or play it all . Back in the day of the SNES, you could at least play all the good games or the games you are interested in. Today, with developers pumping games non-stop in addition to the indie scene there are so many games that you will never know about . Indie developers are back to being so small that some got only 2 people like 2D Boy , yet they can put out games in higher quality than big developers like World of Goo (which was very well made) . Not to mention Mods, like Brutal Doom which I am not sure if a redesigned game or just extra features.
This thought came to me when I was browsing the iOS store, only to see so many games that look so good and some with high reviews but you would never know about them. Some games have been there for few years.
I am not even sure whats on WiiWare (does this still exist?),Steam, PSN, XBL, or Google Play

This was never clearer to me than when I taught my games course this last semester. Lots of folks who spend a lot of time gaming do so with the same half dozen franchises or 1-2 genres.

Which were the franchises or genres that people played?

Madden, COD, Halo, and NBA2K seemed to be the most popular.

Hmm. Replace Halo and NBA with GTA and Battlefield, and that's the people I know.
