Not sure who watches that shit. Certain people find redneck simpletons to be "endearing" I guess. When you grow up in a rural area and have to deal with folks like that on a regular basis it gets tiresome quickly.
Either you haven't watched a lot of the show, or your very discriminatory towards that group of people. I mean really, "simpletons". I guess if you find family values, outdoorsman ship, and running a highly successful business as simpleton.

The show will never be a favorite of mine, that's not what I'm saying. It just seems pretty damn ignorant to label an entire group of people as "simpletons".

That's really not too different than labeling metal-heads as just a bunch of drunken idiots, or all rap-fans as gang-bangers.

I thought the DD folks embraced the term "redneck" and boasted about their "simple ways". No?

Living a simple life and simple ways doesnt mean simpleton. Simpleton implies lack of intelligence.

fair enough. That said, by most traditional measures of intelligence they'd probably fall on the lower end as they seem to exhibit a lot of behaviors and attitudes associated with more poorly educated communities where IQ isn't valued. Maybe they aren't actually "simple minded" at all, but they wrap themselves in all the markers that American culture associates with low intellect and, to an extent, invite the critique by doing "hilarious" things like eating raccoon feces.

I most definitely despise family values.

I support the War on Christmas too.

You dont think it would be funny for one to acidentally eat animal crap that they thought were berries due to poor eye sight?

This post also strikes me as elitist and from you Dave. People who like to do outdoors type of stuff like hunting, fishing, boating etc.. have low intelligence and iq? Basically you saying the south is less intelligent.

Im not championing them as geniuses nor do I love the show, but it sounds like more of 'dont like what I dont like' and those who have different beliefs and/or values than mine are not as intelligent.

Redneck, sure. But simpleton? Who would champion that?

Of course not everyone who enjoys rural living or fishing, etc. are folks of low IQ (I live in the sticks and enjoy many of those activities). I'm just saying that there are a ton of statistical correlations between low intelligence and more rural lifestyles. This is, to my mind, largely due to the lack of money spent on/available to spend on good education in rural areas (though it isn't the only reason). Some of the poorest educated counties in this country are often the ones where the "redneck lifestyle" is more prominent and celebrated, regardless of their position vis a vis the Mason-Dixon line. Everything I have seen or heard about the DD folks suggests that they revel in being associated with this culture, which has this stigma of "low intelligence" associated with it. It seems that a lot of the humor on this show (like Honey Boo Boo and similar before) comes from poking fun at how dimwitted these people can be, willfully adhering to the negative stereotype or trying to reclaim it as something positive ("it's ok to be dumb - look how much money we made!").

And rap is associated with gangs. So that must mean all people that listen to rap, is in a gang.
