Screen suggestions (Shmups, consoles?)

Post by Erik_Twice »

My screens are dying one by one. First one burned out. Then the second has a broken set of buttons which I still haven't quite fixed and the third has a very flaky VGA connector because that was still a thing in my rig.

I'm back to square one and I'm thinking of staying there for a while. Most of the games I want to play don't support Triplescreen (Arcade games, strategy titles, etc) and I haven't played TF2 in ages.

So here's my ideal screen so you can recommend me something like it.

1) Can be rotated to play Shmups (How big are arcade monitors anyways? Perhaps that's why Battle Garegga's bullets are so hard to see, the screen I played it on was too small)
2) I can connect consoles (Obviously can't happen)
3) Is under 200€. But I'm a cheapstake and would prefer something much cheaper.
4) Is pretty, I guess?

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? Should I buy a Dreamcast instead?

Pew pew, shmups pew.

First off, yes you should buy a Dreamcast if you don't have one already.

As for the matter at hand, I have a computer monitor at home that meets many of your needs. The Samsung SyncMaster 215TW is a wonderfully versatile monitor.

There's a lenghty review here.

The only problem is that these monitors haven't been sold new for years. I bought a used one on ebay for less than $100 USD (about 73.19€)

Woha, that's EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Any more modern alternatives? How big is a 21 incher widescreen compared to my 15 inch 4:3?

to rotate my monitor I use this:

to play consoles on a VGA monitor, I've used this:

Battle Garegga - go into the settings, it's in Japanese so you'll have to find a how-to as I can't recall w/o looking at it...but there is an option to "turn RED BALL off", it makes the bullets visible. This is a must to play the Saturn Port.

For the nexvision noise linked, I have a CIB setup, used for an hour, i'm looking to get rid of it, but I think the shipping to Spain would kill it.

I've been looking around a bit and I doubt screens with analog inputs are common so I started searching for the monitor Samsonlonghair recommended to no avail. I don't know where to find a unit, it shouldn't be that difficult.

If I can't find it, I'll finally trust Noise and simply use an adapter and buy a rotatory screen (Which should be easier than buying a screen and a support). Which opens another can of worms because now I have to find all those things.

I asked in a Spanish forum about screens with analog inputs and called a local shop but so far I haven't had any luck with it.

@mjmjr25

I've only played the arcade version through MAME which doesn't have the Red Ball option. I've also been told it doesn't make all bullets visible, only those that are directly aimed at the player so yeah, there's that XD

The shipping will probably kill it so I'm going to try find a more local solution. Thanks anyways.

A twenty-one inch screen is significantly wider than a fifteen inch screen and a little bit taller.

You want something more modern and larger? Investigate the Samsung FX2490HD. I don't have this monitor personally, so I cannot attest to its quality. I know that it's a modern LED display sold around 2010 - 2011. I believe this twenty-four inch monitor rotates. This newer version has no s-video input, but it does have multiple hdmi inputs, and a coax cable input with TV tuner. There's also component, composite, and VGA (but no DVI). I assume the European version also comes with SCART. Here's a review. You might want to google a Spanish review to see how the connections work in Europe.

Edit: I dug up this info for you. I do not live in Spain, so I cannot swear to this personally.
Ingresso segnale
Segnale video RGB analogico, DVI, HDMI1, HDMI2, Componente, CVSB, TV (analogico, digitale), SCART
Segnale sync. H / V separato, composito
Connettori D-sub, 2 x HDMI, Component, CVBS,Sintonizzatore TV , Uscita ottica, Ingresso audio, Uscita cuffie, SCART,CI

The complement of inputs wasn't that uncommon several years back for certain classes of monitors. My HP LP2475W has quite a lot of options there. Replacement models seem to have dropped most of them - which, to be fair, is logical due to most consumer devices now having HDMI output.

The rotation is something that a fair number of monitor stands can do though. Dell's Ultrasharp line includes a stand that can, for example. Both of my HP monitors can as well. (well, that can do portrait as well as landscape orientation, continuing to rotate I dunno, but I also don't know what the need would be for that).

I'm trying to find those three suggestions but I haven't found any place where I can buy them, the only ones that show up are out of stock.

Any ideas?

Try a 14" Sony PVM for consoles - there's a steal of a deal right now for $60 shipped. This thing is a top-tier CRT and it supports RGB, Component, S-video, and video signals. Perfectly flat on every side, so rotating is no problem.
