Hori

I think the only other vert I have for the SNES is Imperium...which is ok. Strike Gunner STG is vert, but is horribly unispired. Aero Fighters is a good vert but too expensive, it's much cheper to buy sfc version Sonic Wings. There are a couple more jp only released games. Pop 'n Twin bee is kinda blah. I can't think of any others at the moment...

Edited my original post to add a TINY bit of information to get started.

Certainly my list was just off the top of my head so most of the games are geared towards what I like. Did I mention Mars Matrix? :D

Haha!I just scanned your list and for some reason I thought you weren't a fan of hori's! You got a good mix on there.

Lords of Thunder is where it's at - especially with the rockin' soundtrack on the Sega CD version (my avatar is even from this game). If you liked Gate, you'll love this.

Mars Matrix is a hardcore shmup for the Dreamcast. It will crush your soul. It's THAT hard.

And it's one of my favorites.

I would tell people not to start off with Ikaruga, but that's where I began playing shoot 'em ups again, so I don't know why I would suggest that. Shoot 'em ups are difficult, and that's just the way it is. A good portion of the fans have played them so long, or have so much natural talent, that generic shooters a non-fan might have trouble beating are considered too easy. Bullet Hell earns its title.

The verts I would suggest include Ikaruga, Psyvariar 2, Shikigami no Shiro III, Radilgy, and Karous.

Favorite Horis of mine include Trouble Witches, Border Down, and Gradius V.

If you want something to ease yourself into the genre, the Touhou games are great doujin verts. Not my bag, though I have to admit they have some of the prettiest bullet patterns in the business.

Indeed Lords of Thunder is awesome. People rag on the sega cd version because the Turbo Duo one has more colors displayed, but i find it to play just as good. The sound effects are my only complaint, they are way too repetative and grading to me. Other than that it's my second favorite shmup on the system. What's number one you may ask, ROBO ALESTE!!! Then Android Assault is rounds up the top three.

Doc I knew I liked you. Ack I have actual copies of most of the games Doc suggested - including Perfect Cherry Blossom, if you want to borrow them. I do not have Axelay since it makes me dizzy (havent figured that one out yet but I am guessing its the backgrounds)

Have you got a Genesis/Megadrive? If so, one title you MUST try: Thunder Force 4.

I've been playing Bari Armi on the Mega CD recently too, which seems really good - so far.
