Accordingly, the games will have to be taken down when Capcom's license to use Marvel characters expires.8bit wrote:I never really understand the reason for why digital XBLA or PSN games need to be taken down.... Its not like Capcom doesn't fully own the rights to MvC2... very strange to me.
EDIT: It would be awesome if Capcom kept the game up and simply re-skinned all of the Marvel characters into well-known public domain characters like Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood, Zorro, all the characters in The Wizard of Oz, Hercules, Cthulu, The Cheshire Cat, etc.
DOUBLE EDIT: The more I think about it, that would be really f*cking awesome. Get on it Capcom!

Mind my simpleton thinking but why not just renew the licence after it expires? I mean there's obviously demand.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Certainly, Capcom owns the code and the rights to all of its characters. I know. I know. I would still like to see a fighting game with the titans of classic Capcom franchises, history, mythology, and literature, however.AppleQueso wrote:They already made a franchise out of public domain horror archetypes, it's called "Darkstalkers"
At this point, there probably is not that much demand for the game. Moreover, another company may want exclusive rights to publish games with Marvel characters (and be willing to pay a lot of money for that right). The revenue stream from continuting MvC3 sales at this point probably does not justify the amount Capcom would have to pay Marvel Entertainment to keep using the characters.oxymoron wrote:Mind my simpleton thinking but why not just renew the licence after it expires? I had that idea years ago, too. I brought it up with a game developer. Turns out, lots of people have this idea, but very few companies would want to make it.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I know. I know. I dunno. It seems unusually short notice for a conventional license squabble. Especially with the Vita not affected.
Lum fan.

Well, o.pwuaioc, you and I are just going to have to learn how to code and make the damn game ourselves. (I see Kickstarter in our future...)o.pwuaioc wrote:I had that idea years ago, too. I'll design if you code (OK, I know how to code a bit, but not nearly enough for a project like this).prfsnl_gmr wrote:Well, o.pwuaioc, you and I are just going to have to learn how to code and make the damn game ourselves. My take has been historical/mythical, aka the greatest warriors of all time: Gilgamesh, Odysseus, Achilles, gods, too! Apollo, Athena, Odin, etc...

I probably can't do it in BASIC; so, I think I am going to have to read up a bit before starting on this project...o.pwuaioc wrote:I'll design if you code (OK, I know how to code a bit, but not nearly enough for a project like this).
So... a (hopefully much better) sequel to:o.pwuaioc wrote:My take has been historical/mythical, aka the greatest warriors of all time: Gilgamesh, Odysseus, Achilles, gods, too! Apollo, Athena, Odin, etc...
