Kill la Kill isn't GAINAX. So no, it's not necessarily the GAINAX style. But I will say that Trigger, the studio behind KlK is a whole lot of ex-GAINAX. :P personally I much prefer their other work, Little Witch Academia. You can rightfully assume I'm not really a fan of Imaishi's style.

You do get some of them where the anime is only a 26 episode run or something, but the manga/light novels/whatever it's based on is more substantial.
True, but the anime adaptations tend to at least try and wrap things up by the time it ends and mostly stand alone.

One thing that peeves me is when you have a manga that's a reasonable length, but has an anime adaptation that was made before the manga was finished that completely goes off the rails towards the end because they had to just make shit up.

Oh, definitely. I think it's mostly a matter of knowing when an anime is an adaptation or not. It took me a while to realize just how often that was the case, and in turn how some of my preconceived notions about anime were...off.

I think it's better when anime based on incomplete manga just choose to leave things open, or easy enough to retcon (like Claymore for example).

I love how so much anime is only one season. American TV shows, cartoons or otherwise, go on for an insane amount of time. Nearly everything I see on TV has well overstayed its welcome.

Anyone know of long-form anime that don't suck? 40, 50, 100 episodes. A long, involved, awesome story.

Usually with multi season shows things play out differently - a 25-epsidoe story for season 1 and a 25-episode story for season 2. No problem with that, but I've been hoping for something meatier.

I haven't watched many long series. But of the ones I know there are a couple I can recommend.

Monster
Nana

That's about it. Unfortunately Nana only covers about half the manga, which has been on hiatus for years now. I think they were originally going to animate more when the manga had concluded but the manga-ka getting sick and never finishing the series sort of stopped that. Monster, however, is pretty much 100% panel for panel faithful to the manga. Great the whole way through. No filler.

Only other long series I've watched is Shakugan no Shana.. I only recommend it if you like tsunderes. Some of the cast is decent enough, but the way the series is put together, the ending, the main guy, etc... eh. Can't recommend it like I can the other two. Not even close to being in the same league.
