Picture Quality on Gamecube games...

Post by kingdomheights777 »

Any ways, last night i was hooked up my gamecube running s-video to my 20" flat screen (non hd) tv, and put in Mario tennis. Which is by the way a very vibrant game, the colors are kinda too bright at times. I just could not get a decent image at all, it was always an over saturated look , no matter how much i fiddled with the settings. So I popped it into my Wii which i am running with component cables on my 42" hd tv, it then asked me if i wanted to run it in progressive scan so i clicked yes...and OH MY GOSH, the pic was a huge difference. So I started popping in all 47 of my GC games, and they all looked FREAKING FANTASTIC !! I know i may be kinda late to the "game" but i have never really run my gamecube games in my Wii, guess i won't be taking out my Gamecube anymore :(

I got gooed news and bad news.
Good news is there's a component cable for the gc as well.
bad news is that it's 60 BUCKS!
Good for you that you got a component cable for the wii. Most people do not bother and are OK with a bad image. :?

I am so OCD about image quality, it bugs the piss out of my wife. She is like " just leave the settings alone!!"

And only older Gamecubes have the connection for them. I got lucky and found a set of those cables in a Gamestop for $5 a while back.

There's your answer.

For starters, technically your TV is HD (yes, 480p and up are all considered "HD" resolutions. "SD" being 480i and below).

And secondly, low resolution and/or interlaced modes into flatscreen TVs suck. The signal needs to be upscaled, and never looks pretty. Native resolutions only, please sir.

I must correct you here. 480p is not HD. It is Enhanced Definition (ED), the bastard child of "definitions".

I was waiting for that response. I don't subscribe to that "ED" after-the-fact rubbish, and neither should anyone else.

Well, you shouldn't. You're in Australia, I now realize. That's why we shouldn't even be having this conversation. Consumers don't define the standard, the consumer electronic industry's trade organization (CEA in the US) does. And they have defined 480p as ED; SD if really technical about it...but certainly not HD. Australia, with 576p (your equivalent of 480p as you most likely know) has classified it differently. Neither one of us is in a position to tell the other differently.
